Flights within Italy after arrival

We are headed to Italy Oct 28th for our first visit. We know it's the end of the season but dont care. We are visiting Rome, Sorrento, Capri, basically staying in that general area.

We have every stay booked but know to be flexible for activities because of the rainy season.
I am a big science nerd so the draw of Mt Etna erupting still while we are there is big for me.
My question is once we have arrived to Italy from the US, but want to fly to Sicily, what might I need to know to fly again?

We are watching the zone colors. Do we need to covid test again?

For a flight from Rome or Naples to Sicily all you need is your Passport and your CDC card/proof of Vaccination. No need for testing, though you do need to test for your return to the US.

Currently, all regions in Italy are "White", the lowest level, and case rates continue to decline, so not likely there will be any worries on additional restrictions, even "Yellow" imposes no additional restrictions from a practical sense for a couple traveling.

The Etna region had some issues with heavy rain, flooding, mud slides, so some of that may cause disruption, or be cleaned up by the time you are there.

For volcanic activity, you might also check out activity at Campo Flegrei outside of Naples, not a cone type caldera, but usually active fumaroles. Also, a bit more active than Etna might be Stromboli in the Aeolian islands, an easy ferry ride from Sicily to the North.

Appreciate the insight. Have visited several volcanos with lava flows in vents. Interested in seeing active surface lava. Also the travel time to Sicily is a quick flight vs long ferry rides during day with limited actual views that I want to see.
I have no intent to hike or get close, have 3 small kids at home. But want to view it myself from Catania at night and fly back to Naples. This will be a faiy quick trip that I may add on to our current trip depending on if it is still erupting when we arrive.

Just note that if the ash is drifting in the direction of Catania, they can close the airport.

Yes I read and saw that, also saw the back up options. We should be covered. Just needed the extra info regarding flights. Thanks

Check out Easy Jet, they do have fights from Naples and I would assume from Rome but I did not check. Some restrictions regarding luggage. Have used them twice and very pleased.

There are also overnight trains from Rome via Naples to Catania. They will save you a night in a hotel as well as time since you travel while sleeping. They also have the added advantage of not being affected by volcanic ash.
