Flights within Europe

I am seeking advice on a one-way flight from Budapest to Genoa in June. Does anyone have any recommended airlines or tips on how to avoid extra costs, hassles, anything? Much appreciated, thank you.

Both Ryan Air and Wizz Air have flights between Budapest and Genoa.

To avoid extra costs and hassles:

  • book directly with the airline
  • read and understand all conditions of travel (cancellation fees, baggage fees, change fees, allowable baggage weights and dimensions, check-in requirements, ...)
  • generally, purchase early for lowest price
  • purchase any ups and extras at time of initial booking (extra legroom seats, checked bag, ...)

What kind of advice are you looking for?

In general, mainstream nonstop airline options are limited to the national airlines
of the two countries you want to fly between. In this case, I don't think there is a
Hungarian airline anymore, and I'm not sure I'd trust ITA to get me anywhere.

But, do you care about cost, schedule, # of stops, or what?

Your best bet is to check the airport websites for the airlines that serve that airport
and the destinations they serve. Not all the discount airlines are in the fare engine
that is used by Kayak, Expedia, etc, and, the flight schedules are not always consistent
from day to day during the week.

As for extra costs, you need to peruse the fare structure for what it includes and
your specific situation, such as # of bags you plan to check, where you are willing
to sit on the plane, etc.

Hassles? They can come up anyplace, anytime, no way to predict.

Confusing question. Just go to the Wizzair or Ryanair booking site and go through the process slowly and read every page you land on. You will end up paying for the services you choose to pay for.

Read the rules and follow them. I've seen Ryan Air pull people out of line for their luggage that didn't comply in Bologna. Short flights, usually not expensive and I take them between Bologna and other European cities.

On the ryanair site I cannot find Genoa as a 'destination'. What am I doing wrong?

Wizzair has non-stop flights, but on only select days of the week. Depending on the day you need to fly you may need to take 2 flights.
To reduce hassles fly on a day wizzair has the direct flight.

You need to make sure you have the departure airport set to an airport that flies to Genoa, otherwise you won’t see it as a possible destination. Start with Genoa as your departure point and in destination you’ll see a list of all the routes they fly to from there.

Edit: just looked and they don’t fly the route you want. Budget airlines change routes and schedules frequently so it may have dropped off their list.

Flightsfrom.com gives you all direct flights from any city in the world. It shows discount airlines unlike a lot of search engines.

I depend on Skyscanner to figure out intra-european flights.

WizzAir is the only carrier that flies from Budapest to Genoa direct. All the other carriers, including Ryanair, fly that route with a change. Cheapest is $35 with WizzAir, and, obviously that’s the baseline, and doesn’t include seat selection, luggage or anything else you might add on.
