Making my first trip with RS and going to Sicily. My wife and I have spent time previously in parts of Italy. What I was curious about is flying to Sicily as I doubt there are direct flights to Palermo. So what is the best gateway airport into Sicily. Thanks.
Best? We flew via Rome (Delta/Alitalia) on the way there, and on Lufthansa/United via Munich on the way back. But depending on where your flying from, your choices with decent connection times may be limited. Return was supposed to be from Catania (where the tour ends), but we ended up flying out of Palermo due to Mt Etna.
When I visited Sicily, I flew to/from Milan.
After s couple of nights in Milan, I took an Easyjet flight to Palermo, and returned to Milan from Catania’s Airport.
Enjoy your trip!
When I did the Sicily tour a few years ago, I opted to fly RT to Rome from Philadelphia, then flew to Palermo and from Catania on Alitalia, which has since ceased flying. One ticket choices were much more expensive and the timing was bad.
I’d think any of the major Italian airports would work. Just depends on your timing and what airlines operate from your home airport. For me, I flew to Catania after several days in Naples. Saw multiple flights listed going to Sicily so Naples would be one option. On the return I went from Palermo to Rome to Chicago, all on one ticket. Very easy. So Rome is another option. I have not used Milan for this but it’s a major airport that would probably be another good choice.
We moved our RS Sicily from March to October so we have been watching those same connections. Here’s my take on it. We had no option for direct to Rome. You probably do. Once in Rome, Palermo is an easy hop. Both Ryanair and Alitalia both offer multiple fights early and late. We are leaning toward Alitalia because we all carry on and their bag rule fits us better on their second level ticket. Prices are similar if you calculate in baggage fee and seat selection. Getting back to US from Catania is more problematic for us. A very early fight is required to make connection to Seattle via AMS. East coast may
be easier.
PS; word has it there is lots to experience in Palermo not included in RS Tour. Consider arriving early and explore while transitioning to the time.
Rome is always good to take in while there making the Catania connection easier.
We alway research Airlines on “Google Flights”.
Depending on when you go the Covid tests and Mask maybe gone and hopefully the dreaded US return test that most of us worry about.
Safe Travels to all

We are flying round trip to Rome on Delta and then picked up flights on Ryanair from Rome to Palermo and Catania back to Rome.
We were on the RS Sicily tour in 2016 and bought round trip tickets from Boston to Rome (Aer Lingus via Dublin). We stayed a couple of days in Rome, then flew on Alitalia to Palermo. At the end of the trip we took a late morning flight from Catania to Rome, stayed overnight and returned home the next day. This flight option was much cheaper than trying to get to/from Sicily on flights with two stops, and the savings paid for the extra nights in Rome. Flying home from Sicily would have involved catching a very early flight from Catania. Some people on the tour did leave early on the last morning of the tour. Leaving so early means getting up at the crack of dawn and breaking the magic spell that surrounds the end of the tour experience.
From Washington DC we flew to/from Catania on United. Going there we had a layover in Munich. On the return, the layover was in Frankfurt.
