Have a tour scheduled to begin mid May. Looks like the best flights are on Portugal Airlines from the Phila area. The transfer in Lisbon is about 2 hrs. Wonder if that is enough time since there are few flights to Florence if we miss the scheduled flight. What I've heard from Rick Steves is to plan at least 3 hours for the transfer. Any other suggestions?
You might check flights from Newark, always more choices at better prices
We leave from EWR if we have to, and you are probably closer than us
Consider flying in to Rome, Venice or Milan a few days early as well
Very easy to then just train to Florence
I believe American has direct flights to Venice from PHL and direct from Rome to PHL
2 hours are sufficient unless your plane from PHL arrives to LIS with a big delay.
I think there is only one flight daily from LIS to FLR, so if you miss it, they might have to put you on a flight to Florence on a Star Alliance partner (like Lufthansa or Swiss) via their respective hubs (there are numerous flights from Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich to Florence).
Generally flying via CDG (Air France), or via Germany (Lufthansa), or via ZRH (Swiss) or via AMS (KLM) offers more choices to Florence as those airlines have at least 3 flights daily to Florence. Or you can fly non stop to Rome and take a train (if you care to see Rome as well). The train from Rome Airport to Florence is only a couple of hours and you can get there on the day of arrival.
We flew out of Florence, connecting in DeGaulle. It was great because the airport in Florence is so easy and close to get to.
That should work. But, don't be too obsessed with flying to Florence. While Florence does have an airport, it is pretty small. And there are other larger airports nearby that might give you more options. You could look at flights to Pisa, Milan or Venice as well.
PHI to FLR there is a good one-stop flight. Non-stop to Rome, more expensive.
Thanks for the replies. Agreed that the most options are out of Newark in this area.
Thanks.
Florence airport is notorious for being windy and many flights re-routed to Bologna or Pisa. We have been rerouted to Bologna but our last trip we took the train up from Rome, which was easy, but our travel companions flew into FLR without a hitch.
