Flights from Florence Italy. Heart of Italy tour 8/30/15

we are going on Heart of Italy tour 8/30/15--9/7/15. We got a reasonable fare over to Italy but since the tour ends in Florence, you suggest flying home from Florence. The price of the one way return tickets are 3--4x more than the flight over (from NY to Rome). We can't afford that! Do you have any suggestions? Thank you, Gwen

FIRST, you absolutely do not book one way ticket either direction. What you book is called open jaw or multi-city. You book a round trip ticket - New York to Rome, Florence to New York. You will find it probably is the same price as the RT ticket to Rome. We book 90% of our trips as open jaw and always find the tickets about the same and sometimes cheap. Probably not cheaper with Florence since you probably will connect to your New York flight in Rome.

PS -- Just re-read your question. Have you booked your New York to Rome ticket already?

You definitely do not want one-way tickets. If you already have purchased one, see if changing it to multi-city round trip can be done.

Thank you for your reply. How do I book the open jaw. The web site does not take it that way?
Do I need to do it by calling the airline? Going to a travel agent? I'm confused.

If you don't find the term "open-jaw" look for the term "multi-city" or similar.

If you have not yet booked your flights, look for "multi city" flights on Kayak. Assuming you want to fly in and out of the New York City area, your first leg is NYC to FCO, and your second leg is FLR to NYC. Using "NYC" will pull up all the New York City airports, if you don't have a reason to prefer one. And under FLR, check the box that says "include nearby airports." This will include Pisa PSA and Bologna BLQ as well as Florence FLR; all three are close enough to Florence to consider, if the departure time and/or price work out.

If you have already booked your flights, let us know EXACTLY which ones they are (including departure and arrival cities and times, and any connections - all very important), and we can offer suggestions.

All travel booking web sites have a multi-city option. If it is confusing you, then go see a travel agent. But the first question still stands. Have you purchased a ticket to Rome??????
