Is it possible to purchase flight cancellation/travel insurance for nonrefundable tickets (in case either of us gets sick or there is a family emergency, etc.)? Thanks, Ruth
Sure. Just read the fine print carefully. Not everything is covered and the more coverage your have the higher the fee. But remember non-refundable are not really non-refundable. You can change the ticket for a fee. Often the trip cancellation insurance will only cover the change fee since you can still use that ticket within the next year. Look at insuremytrip.com, squaremouth.com, and quotewright.com
Thank you Frank! I was worrying myself so much about this!

"...since you can still use that ticket within the next year." That's a year from the date you purchase the ticket, not a year from the date of your scheduled flight. Got caught on that little technicality once myself.
And even "cancel for any reason" coverage has its limitations. You must purchase within a certain period of days of buying your ticket, and you really can't cancel at any time for any reason and get a 100% reimbursement. Travel insurance is a great idea on many levels, but just make sure you read the actual certificate of insurance (i.e. the contract) before you buy so that you know what's covered, what's not, exclusions, etc. Don't just read a few bullet points in the online brochure... ask them to e-mail the certificate if it's not online. I've had to ask with Travelex, but Access America has it on their website.
