Flight Questions: Depart U.S. to Palermo Sicily and Return Naples to U.S.

After a RS Sicily tour this fall, we are flying to Naples and will spend several days there before departing for the us. We are having difficult finding reasonable airfare. We have searched Skyscanner, Kayak, Expedia. Need a flight from Columbus OH to to Palermo Sicily, then Naples back to Columbus OH. (We've purchased an EasyJet flight from Sicily to Naples for 72 euro). Any suggestions?

Susan--can you go to Chicago? The best fares for the Midwest have been from there. Or, can you get to another city in Italy and fly on from there on low-cost tickets--ie. Milan which has had some low-cost transatlantic flights.

Actually this same question has been asked three times today with good responses each time. But I guess we are not responding fast enough for her. But I will not repeat my answer. Put them together.

I just pulled up the following itinerary of United Airlines which is as follows:
Out bound: CMH to EWR to MUC to PAL
Return: NAP to FRA to IAD to CMH
All flights are on either United, Lufthansa or Air Dolomiti with a total cost = $1385. You change planes twice and clear customs in Munich and Washington Dulles, but that is about as good you can do if you want fly directly to Palermo and depart from Naples. I second Frank's advice and think about a few days on Rome and then fly to Palermo on Alitalia and take the train from Naples to Rome.

If you are willing to go to another airport (drive or separate flight) try Toronto. 6-7 hour drive from Columbus, closer than D.C. (I looked). I used to live in Buffalo which is very close to Toronto and flights are often to $500 - $1000 cheaper. Granted, coming on a long drive or separate flight reduces the savings but it might still be worthwhile. There is a direct Alitalia to Rome flight most days, then an easy hop to Palermo.

You might get better pricing returning from Rome rather than Naples. Served by more airlines with better scheduling choices. Better yet book an open jaws ticket from Columbus to Palermo, returning from Rome. I just priced this on Google flights and the fare is about $1,450.
