Flying out (9 am)of Marco Polo airport to Naples- should we be at the airport 2 hours ahead of flight or less?
I, personally, would check with the airline and the airport to see what timings they are suggesting. The increase in concerns over the virus certainly is not going to make travel any easier.
I, personally, would skip the flight and take the train instead. It's 5:20 by direct train, a much more relaxing and less stressful journey than flying.
I change my opinion - YES, take the train! Comfortable, usually on time, great scenery, much easier to get to than the airport, better seats. Mark my first response as a: DUH! What was I thinking!?!
We took the train from the Santa Lucia station to Rome..several quick stops, beautiful countryside,...we loved it! Sooo much better that the stress of the airport, even one as easy as Marco Polo. Our train continued on to Naples.
The trains is very nearly as fast when you consider all the extra time of getting to Marco Polo Airport, the unpleasantness of the Alilaguna, and up early.
So much nicer and so much easier.
If you decide to fly, ask the airline. That's if you can get through.
In times past, one hour would probably have been the suggestion. It is a small airport and a domestic flight.
Take the train. It is pretty cool getting on a train signed for Napoli at Venezia Santa Lucia and alighting at Naples.
Between Rome and Napoli, the train blasts along at 300 km/hr.
Lyrics from Hot Rod Lincoln.
… Now the boys all thought I'd lost my sense
And telephone poles looked like a picket fence
They said, "Slow down! I see spots!
The lines on the road just look like dots"…
It sounds like you have a plane ticket already so 2 hours seems right
Thanks to you all.
Jazz- no plane ticket yet- just gathering info for next May.
Have in tow a tween who would not sit still for 5 hours on the train, even though I agree with those who said to take it.
Checked into flights for next year as they are posted now and train charges for now as I know schedules and prices may
change next year and the flight for 4 people was cheaper.
I know Trentalia do offer reduced rates up to 3 months out, so I will keep an eye.
Have in tow a tween who would not sit still for 5 hours on the train
But the great thing about the train is they don't have to, unlike a plane.
Even better, if you choose the .Italo train you can get her a seat in the cinema carriage (part cinema, part normal seating so she can go back and forth). There's free wifi too.
In a train, the scenery is not a speck 6 miles away, so there is something to look at.
Tweens sitting for 5 hours should not be a problem...sitting around is pretty much a given for them. Cell phone, scenery, snacks, blanket...sounds like a tween paradise. Train travel is so fun, give them a new travel skill, how to take a train in Europe! There are lots of young people on the train, it is the norm.
The free on-board WiFi would keep a teen amused. And there is always the bar car for adults.
We did the fast train from Venice to Florence a few years ago, it and it was great and not that expensive.
Nigel thank you. I forgot about Italo train and checked it out and seems to be cheaper than Trentalia.
I will keep an eye for seat sales on both next February.
As others have mentioned there is no need to sit the entire journey in the seat, and if you do the seats a way more comfortable than the seat on a plane. In addition, you can use electronic devices any time you like and bring as much liquids as you want.
And there is always the scenery to look at.
Pack apicnic, pack a bottle of wine, gaze out the windows, check out a little bit of Rome and Florence as you pass through those stations.
Enjoy the countryside, check out how agriculture is done comparing the land around Venice (flat) vs south(hilly).
Talk with seat mates.
Enjoy.
Alternative.
Venice to Marco Polo 3/4 hour.
Arrive an hour before your flight.
Stand in line for boarding.
Flight time say 1.5 hours
Deplane in Naples
Wait for baggage
Travel from airport to lodging.
Train is way easier.
Thanks all again for your in put-
Aussie you are very persuasive - I am leaning towards the train.
As mentioned before this is for next May so keeping options open at this time.
Of course take the train. It's a no-brainer. Yes, the tween can take a 5 hour train ride, and there's nothing that confines you to a seat for the entire duration. You can get up and walk around from the tip of the train to the end of the train if you like. THere's usually a snack/dining car. The train is 1000 times better than a plane.
