I will be traveling from FCO to Palermo in mid-September and wonder what airline you have traveled on. I will have a small day bag and my small suitcase (traveling "Rick Steves" light). I have never flown the discount airlines - what do I need to look out for? Thanks for your advice.
I am looking at Ryanair right now. Vueling does not have flights in the morning on a Sunday. Any other airlines that are less expensive than Alitalia's $200 rate?
Easyjet-Easyjet-Easyjet! major thing to remember-"one" means "one," and do carefully follow the sizing directions on their website. Have flown Easyjet several times, Vueling the last couple of times, and the pricing is pretty even, however, the Vueling planes are pretty tired, and the baggage service on our last trip from Palermo to FCO was longer than the flight-forgot we landed during lunch!
Pay baggage fee for check in luggage when you book ticket on line. It's cheaper than paying for it at the airport.
Only one carry on (not one+ a smaller one) and strictly within size limit
Boarding passes must be printed before going to airport (or use a smart phone)
Use Wikipedia (Fiumicino airport article) to see airlines to PMO (in the Destinations section). RyanAir also flies from Rome Ciampino airport (CIA) which is their hub in Rome.
Consider also that Sicily has 4 international airports when selecting where to land. They are (in order of passenger traffic): CTA, PMO, TPS, CIY.
Thanks Jerry! Unfortunately they don't fly from Rome to Palermo (and I already have my flight booked to LA from Rome). I'll keep them in find for another time.
Roberto, thanks for the tips. I do need to fly directly to Palermo though. The Wikipedia entry is interesting. Thanks!
Barbara,
It's unfortunate that EasyJet seems to have discontinued their flights from Rome to Palermo, as I've used those in the past.
The earliest Vueling flight from FCO to PMO seems to be 14:00, arriving 15:10. If you'd prefer to travel in the morning, I suppose that won't be an option. I've flown with Vueling and would certainly recommend them
You may be able to use RyanAir as they appear to have departures at 08:20 and 11:50, which may fit your schedule. Unfortunately they don't seem to have schedules posted beyond about 9 July, so you'll have to check again in a month or so. If RyanAir fits the timing you want, that's certainly an option. They seem to be improving their customer service lately, which is nice to see. Be sure to read their Terms & Conditions carefully, especially related to luggage and the size and weight of carry-on items. Although you'll be travelling light, you'll probably have to check one of your bags.
Thanks Ken. Do you think the Alitalia rates will go down later in the year? I guess I'm spoiled with having so many flight options in other cities:) Well, maybe I'd better get the Ryanair flight before the morning ones are sold out. Thanks for your help.
If your LAX-FCO is on Alitalia, find out how much it would cost to change the flight to LAX-Palermo (via FCO). That may be your best bet, because then Alitalia is responsible for getting you to Palermo if there's any delay.
If you fly on a discount airline and you are delayed checking in for the flight, you'll lose the ticket and have to buy a new one at full price . . . and hope there's a seat available.
I flew from Rome (FCO) to Palermo in June 2014 for the RS Sicily tour. I flew on Vueling. Purchased my ticket early (5-6 months prior) and paid for checking in my suitcase at the same time. I think the total cost was less than $90. The staff were friendly, the flight was pleasant. I would fly them again without hesitation.
Great! Thanks Mary!
I flew Alitalia from Rome to Palermo. They include one checked bag in their regular prices, so they may actually be cheaper than a "budget" airline if you have to check a bag anyway. They have something like 9 flights a day on that route, and the sooner you buy the cheaper it is (they have 4 price levels, and the lowest one sells out fast). Look at Alitalia's International website (it has an English language option), which has offered lower priced tickets for this route than their US website.
