flight costs

Hi,

Planning our trip to Italy for July and keeping an eye on flights. I know you can't predict when the price will be right, but right now, non stop Toronto-Rome, return for 3 adults and 1 child is $3990 with Air Transat (through Expedia).

Does that some like a decent price or has anyone gotten it cheaper that I should wait a little longer to book it.

Thanks everyone.

Probably shouldn’t tell you this, but my sister used some of her points and got us RT tickets Boise- Milan, Rome-Boise for under $400 each. British Airways and Horizon Air. Good luck!

The best advice I ever received was: watch the airline web sites and when you find a price you are willing to pay, book it. AND don't look back!

I recently booked (for June-August) Philadelphia to Rome via Montreal on Air Canada $1102.42 US for premium coach. Exactly the schedule I want and much much less than my usual American Airlines price. The day before it was $1000 more. It pays to look around!

The general advice is not to use third parties such as Expedia to book airfares, but rather to book directly with the airline. People seem to have fewer customer service problems if they book with the airline. Having said that, sometimes the price difference is so dramatic that it might pay to go with the third party site. I have also seen situations where a particular itinerary simply was not available on the regular airline website.

I've heard that about third parties, but I've used Expedia several times and haven't had a problem. Maybe I've just been lucky!.

Just checked Air Transat directly and the cost is $3989, so no difference.

I was just wondering if that was a decent price, if anyone's done the same trip.

At around $750US for a RT, it looks pretty good to me.( But my frame of reference is from the West Coast, so may be a bit skewed)

There is much more room for an increase compared to how much lower it could go.

If the schedule is what you want, I would go ahead and buy from the airline.

I’ve done Toronto - Rome and paid about that. I consider under $800 (in summer, winter is less) good from Toronto. I have occasionally seen, and bought, more like $700 but that’s never a given. I’ve never used Air Transat, just Air Canada and Alitalia from Toronto to Italy.

Honestly, I’d buy at that rate. But there’s no way to tell, it may drop the day after you buy or it may keep rising. Pick a rate you are ok with and Don’t look back!

Ok, so if I see it anywhere from 7-900/person, I should go for it.

Thanks everyone.

Check out flights.google.com - Googles price tracker for flights. I use this all the time. Put your search criteria in and then turn on price tracking. You will get emails when the price goes up/down and when you see the right price, jump on it. I recently tracked flights from Cleveland to Rome for a friend of mine to travel in Feb. He got a roundtrip price of $350USD on Delta by watching the prices (sadly, a few days later the price dropped to $295 for a short period). I went in December and paid $420 roundtrip.

Hope this helps! -TJ

Google flights is good, I actually had a kayak alert for ATL-FCO for 2 YEARS starting 3 Thanksgivings ago for any dates. I got an email every morning for all of the best prices for any dates. I started to see my desired dates and prices start to line up, and I jumped on a $548 RT from Atlanta. I would put some kind of alert on and set it to let you know every day. Hopper is a good app to do that too.
