flight connections FCO

I'll be joining the RS Sicily tour in Oct. In shopping for tickets I discovered that multi-city tickets (NY-Palermo-Rome-NY) costs almost 2.5 times more than NY-Rome RT and Rome-Palermo RT.

My question is, my Alitalia NY-Rome flight arrives at 6:45am, the Alitalia Rome-Palermo flight departs at 10:00am. Since I will be on the secure side of the airport (in Fiumicino), can I go through passport control and then directly to my gate for the Palermo flight? or will I need to check-in at the Alitalia counter at Fiumicino and go through Security all over again? I think probably not but I'd like to hear from anyone with experience traveling on 2 tickets for connecting flights.

(I do plan to 'check-in' via website for both flights)

Thank you for any experiences you can share

You go through PP control and then to your gate-that's it.

Thank you Laura and Gerry.

Laura - yes, I did check 'open jaw' several times. Different prices each time (using the same set of dates) on Alitalia. I was surprised by the price differences.

You must be doing something wrong. We fly open-jaw tickets about 90% of the time and normally find open jaw tickets to be within a few dollars of a similar RT tickets. Sometimes we have found open jaw tickets to be cheaper.

I don't completely understand your question. Are you using two separate tickets that are not linked together? Or is it one ticket with a change of planes in Rome? If two tickets you will go through security again, because you will do both immigration and customs in Rome.

Hi Frank,
In the past I have purchased open jaw tickets to Italy. I wasn't concerned about making my connection then because the entire trip was on 1 ticket.

A few days ago I checked flight prices for my upcoming trip to Italy. Since Alitalia does not fly direct from NY to Palermo I had 2 options.
Option 1: fly NY - Palermo (via Rome) / Palermo - Rome / Rome - NY.

The prices ranged from $2200-$2800. I tried pricing the flight from different computers on different days using the same travel dates. I thought maybe cookies might be affecting the results.

Option 2: fly NY-Rome / Rome-NY was $880 and Rome-Palermo / Palermo-Rome was $110

Option 2 was cheaper so I purchased those tickets.

My question is, since I'm traveling on 2 different tickets, when I land in Rome (Fiumicino) am I expected to deplane, go through passport control, exit Customs, and check-in at the Alitalia counter for my next flight to Palermo?

When I deplane, I'm already on the secure side of the terminal so can I go through passport control and follow the signs for 'flight connections'? I'm assuming I can, but I thought I would ask incase this is not the case.

na,

One other point to keep in mind about Rome / FCO is that there are several terminals, so your arrival flight and departure flight may use different terminals (one terminal was damaged by fire recently and may not be back in full operation). In my experience, it's likely you'll have to go through security again if your two flights use different terminals.

Regarding the tickets, if you buy code share flights (booked on the same ticket between partner airlines), your checked luggage will probably go through to your end destination. If you book separate tickets, you'll have to retrieve your checked luggage in Rome and then re-check it for the flight to Palermo.
