Flight Connection Question

Flying IAD to MUC to VCE on United. The MUC to VCE leg is codeshare with Air Dolomiti. We are doing carry on only, and I am pretty sure my carry on will exceed the 7kg weight for Air Dolomiti. With that being the case, will Air Dolomiti just gate check my bag? Will I have to pay? Or is this a non issue and they dont normally pay any attention. Our bags are the Motherlode Mini 21" bag so size shouldnt be much of an issue.

I also feel pretty good about the fact that we will miss our connection. It is only 40 minutes, so I hope the MUC airport is nice for our wait on the next available flight. I am fine with missing the connection, knew the risk.

If it fits the overhead compartment, they won’t make a fuss. They won’t weigh it. They use the Embraer190, which does not have huge overhead compartments, but if size is 21” you should be ok.

Air Dolomiti is part of the Lufthansa group, and the gate change is at the same terminal. MUC is probably the most efficient airport in Europe and it has my personal record of shortest gate change (I also take Lufthansa to MUC then Air Dolomiti to Florence): 10 min, including passport control. Unless your arrival flight is late, you won’t miss any connection.

According to Air Dolomiti's website, the weight limit for hand baggage is 8 kg, the same as for Lufthansa. Ever since I have been trying to stay below the carry-on limits, I have not had a problem staying below 8 kg.

All you will have to be concerned with in Munich is Schengen Immigration (passport check). You have to go through Immegration to get between the internation and domestic levels at Munich. Immigration is in the middle of Terminal 2 at Munich, a very long walk from the United gates, if that is what you are really flying (not so far from the Lufthansa gates if this is actually a codeshare flight with Lufthansa). Since Air Dolomiti is expecting you, 40 minutes is doable, but who know when your flight from the US will arrive?
