Flight Connecting/Transit at Fiumicino Airport

Hi
I am travelling from Dublin, Ireland, to Rome FCO T3 (an international flight from a non-schengen country) with an onwards connecting flight from Rome FCO Terminal 1 to Florence.
Does anyone know if I can stay airside or will I have to exit through customs and go through security again for the flight Rome to Florence. I have no bags but have separate tickets.

Have you already purchased the tickets or are you still in the planning stage?

How much time is there between your scheduled arrival in Rome and the departure flight to Florence?

Since Rome is where you enter the Schengen zone, you will have to go through passport control ( immigration) there. How long that will take is like asking about next week's winning lottery numbers. The range is typically 30-90 minutes.

I have not done a transfer at FCO, just arrive or depart. What airlines are you using? That will be helpful to others who have used FCO as a transit place in addressing your issue of going through security.

Thanks for reply - yes, tickets booked.
Aer Lingus Dublin - FCO and Alitalia to Florence.
I have 2 hours from landing to departure.

Wear your running shoes, no flip flops or high heels.

If you arrive on time and passport control is not swamped with wide bodies arriving from afar you have a decent chance to make it.

What could be an issue is that some flights do not park at the terminal building but require taking a bus from a remote parking space to the terminal. If either one or both of your flights do this, life gets very 'exciting'. Any option to change your flight schedule?

Good luck

Things I have learned about connections:

  • Check with the first airline in advance. They may be able to issue a boarding pass for your second flight when you check in. Ask again at the check-in counter.
  • While you're on the first flight, tell the crew that you have a short connection. They may be able to find out what your departure gate is at FCO and they may be able to expedite getting you off the plane. BTW book an aisle seat as far forward as possible.
  • At FCO, wherever you encounter a line, find a staff person and tell them you have a short connection. Sometimes there's a dedicated line, sometimes they can put you at the front of the line. You may have to go through security again.
