I came across a notice for a flag throwing event in Florence on May 1. This looks like an annual event. That’s a little earlier than I planned to go, but would consider changing plans to take this in. Has anybody been, or know anything about it?

I think flag-throwing is a part of many sorts of festivities in that part of the world - Labor Day, in this case. I happened to witness part of the celebration of the Festival of San Giovanni on June 24th. The parade included flag throwers.

There are several events throughout the year and they have “sbandieratori” (flag throwers) in many towns. In Florence, the 24th of June is the patron’s day (st. John the Baptist) and on that day there are exhibitions followed by the final of historical football and fire works in the evening. If that date works for you, it’s a good day to be in Florence.
