Our flight is around 10:30 on Saturday from Terminal 5 to U.S. We plan to arrive around 7:30 and wonder if there is a place to have breakfast, or should we eat in Rome before heading to the airport? Is 3 hours to much time to allow for check-in?
T-5 is not a real terminal with gates and planes. It's a former hangar that was converted into a check in processing area for airlines that require higher security due to high risk for terrorism ( I.e. all US based airlines and El Al of Israel). After you are done with the security procedures in T-5, on the sterile area airside you will be picked up by a bus on the Tarmac that takes you back to the airside of T-3, which is a real terminal with actual gates where planes dock. In T-3 you will find places where you can eat.
Thanks so much for the quick reply! This makes our return so much less stressful knowing what to expect.
Roberto gave, as usual, perfect info. Three hours is not too much to allow for check in, especially with the current ISIS threat. I've found that during any 'incident' security in Rome is tighter, and slower. You will find all kinds of food in T-3.
Just to add to the above replies, after you go through the security formalities in T5, you will be bused back to T3 and take an escalator up to the departure area. Just behind the escalator is a large food area, with pretty good food and lots of varied options. It also has lots of space to spread out and relax before your flight. You can even buy a bottle of water to take one on your flight (since you're past security).
