We'll be traveling home after 3 weeks in Italy on July 3rd with our two teen boys. Our flight to the USA stops in Frankfurt but leaves Rome at 7:00 am. We are wondering if we need to be at the airport at 5:00 am? Ive seen different opinions on the forums. Any one have recent experience? We are also trying to decide if we stay in an airport hotel (which I'm not in love with) or somewhere near Rome or Ostia. We wont have a car and will be relying on a shuttle or taxi to get to Fiumicino in the morning. Any advice?
At least by 5.30 since it is a domestic flight you will not have to clear immigration till Frankfurt. A taxi from Rome at the time of morning would be less than 45 minutes.
Check in online night before.
Order taxi from hotel the night before.
So you get there between 5 am and 5:30 at the latest.
I have only flown out of Rome once for a trip back home to the U.S. Our flight left early, about 7:00 a.m. Airport personnel were very unorganized, and many people were frustrated waiting in line to check in. We were glad we arrived with plenty of time to spare. Hopefully, you will have a better experience.
I stayed at this hotel in Fiumicino. Has shuttle service ( modest fee), nice courtyard for a drink or picnic dinner and is a couple blocks from the beach.
Sit at the beach, watch the sunset and reminisce on your trip on its last day.
FCO to FRA is an intra Schengen flight, equivalent to a domestic in the US.
Be at the airport 75-90 min prior to departure. You must have completed your check in procedures and have a boarding pass in your hands at least 45 min prior to departure.
If you stay downtown you need about 30 min by taxi at that time in the morning.
Our B&B host over by the Vatican called a car service for us last month, and the ride out to FCO wasn't very far. The $50 charge wasn't much more money than a couple of (expensive) tickets on the Leonardo Express from Rome Termini.
We had no problems promptly checking through security for our intra EEU flight.
I'd suggest just staying where you are in Rome and going by shuttle or taxi out to FCO.
