We will arrive at 9:45 on May 12th and will head to Assisi. It looks like we will miss the only bus from the airport to Assisi so we plan to take the train or bus to either Tiburtina or Termini to catch the train. I've check "trainline Europe" for times. Which would be faster to get to the train station and is there a price difference? Thanks, Jo
I've never heard of »Trainline Europe«. Check the schedule directly with the national railway company which runs the trains: www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
Be careful with advance booking of a train, even when it would come with a discount. You can't be sure about the time you'll be able to catch the train. The flight can be delayed, there can be long rows at immigration, there might be an issue with your luggage, or whatever.
The cheapest way, and not requiring reservations would be Regionale trains, changing at Tiburtina and Foligno, although there is a direct train from Tiburtina to Assisi at 2:32 pm. Cost would be 17.90 euro and you can buy the tickets at the airport train station. Trains to Assisi more or less every hour. Trains from the airport to Tiburtina go every 15 minutes.
I do this trip every year - it really is simple (after you get used to it). Take the Leonardo express from FCO to Roma Termini. If you check trenitalia.com you can find a train that goes directly to Assisi about 2:30. The earlier trains do have very easy connections so there should be no problem - just remember to be ready to exit the train in Assisi since it only stops for a very short minute. My first time I was still getting my luggage together and . . . well, you know laughing at yourself is very healthy!
Robert, fortunately the next stop is just a few kilometers from Assisi!
Don't forget to validate those regionale train tickets before boarding the train. It's a bit too easy to forget that when you've just landed, sleepless, after a transatlantic flight.

Regionale tickets to Tiburtina are 8 euro, the Leonardo Express to Termini is 14 euro. The Leonardo Express is faster as it is truly an express, while the Regionale to Tiburtina is a local, making many stops, but skipping Termini. Tiburtina is also a much saner train station than the zoo that Termini often is. All the Regionale trains from Termini to Assisi also stop at Tiburtina. In total there is a 6.40 euro price difference between using the 2 stations.
Jo,
I've also never heard of "Trainline Europe". You'll get more accurate information by using the Trenitalia website, as they're the ones that actually operate the trains. The Bahn.de (German Rail) website is also good for information as it covers trains all over Europe.
As the trains you'll likely be using from Rome to Assisi will be Regionale, it's just as easy to buy your tickets when you arrive at the FCO airport rail station. As someone else mentioned, DON'T forget to validate the tickets prior to boarding the train, or you'll risk hefty fines!
