My wife and I will be arriving at Rome at 9:45 Pm. Flying with British Airways. Could any one tell me how long it takes to get through customs and pick-up luggage ? As we would like to take the Leonardo Express into Termini (Rome) and the last train (per Rick's book) say it leaves at 10:30 PM..
Very hard to forecast. You need to go through immigrations and not customs. In the past for us it was quick, wait a bit in line, step up, tell them you are on vacation, check the passport and go. It will be tight.
According to the Trenitalia website, trains depart twice hourly at :06 and :36 with the last train departing at 11:36 pm. I checked a few dates out to September 30, and all days showed the same late departure. You can check for your exact date by going to www.trenitalia.it. Station names must be entered in Italian, so departure station will be Fiumicino Aeroporto and arrival station will be Roma Termini. If ticket windows and news stand at the departure platform are closed, there are ticket machines from which you can buy tickets into Rome.
If you miss the train, you can grab a taxi 40 euros into the historic distric in Rome.
If you do end up taking a taxi, discuss with the driver the fare and have him write it down. This is imp. we were swindled for an xtra 20 euros on our airport to Rome hotel fare. To this day it
is a bad feeling.
Mark,
The time will probably depend to some extent on how many flights are arriving at that time. If there are a lot of people waiting to go through Immigration, the queues will be LONG. Also, at that time of night they may only have a few Agents manning the booths.
On my last trip, I believe it was at least 1 - 1.5 hours to collect my luggage off the carousel, get through Immigration and get to the airport station to board the Leonardo Express.
Good luck and happy travels!
I don't think that you should be on the Metro at that time of night, nor at the Termini Station. You should have your hotel arrange a ride for you. The rate two and from the airport is a set rate, 40 Euro. The best way to make certain that you don't get ripped off by a taxi driver is to have this arranged for you ahead of time. They wait just outside the baggage area holding a sign with your name on it. This is how I get to and from the airport, always.
