Fiumelatte, Lake Como to Varenna, Lake Como

I need help with logistics.

So I had originally rented a place for 3 nights in Varenna in late Sept this year on AirBnb, already paid for. But my host just told me that it needed to be cancelled and suggested I stay in another one if his rentals. There's not another one in Varenna proper. The closest one is in Fiumelatte. The place is nice and I'm considering it - but only if it works with the logistics.

Also I will NOT have a car with me on this trip. I had originally picked Varenna as I'll be coming by train from Milan and I know that the train stops in Varenna. Also I'm aware that Varenna has access to ferries so that I can visit the other surrounding towns.

So with this in mind, does anyone know if Fiumelatte is worth staying in / has anything to offer? Also how far walking distance is Fiumelatte is from the train, metro or station or bus station? Is it a pain to walk to Varenna from Fiumelatte or do you have to take the metro, bus or taxi? Are there ferries that depart from Fiumelatte?

I appreciate your feedback!

If you want to be in walking distance of everything, stay in Varenna or Menaggio. Use the ferry to get around the lake and to the villages.

There is a train station in Fiumelatte (2 minutes to Varenna, but running not quite hourly). The walk is about a half hour by either the main road or the hiking trail. No ferry and fewer services in general. There are also taxis, but we'd say this location is more appropriate for someone with a car.

Thank you both for your feedback. Does anyone know if renting bicycles is an option? Or even avail in the area?

Thank you!

The only connection I am aware of between Varenna and its "suburb" of Fiumelatte along the lake is a sidewalk, narrow in places, along the main road.

It is called that, because there is a small short river which rises there and goes for a short turbulent journey down to the lake. Called Milk River because of the white colour from the foam.

If you are looking for bikes, etc., because your landlord has dropped you in a difficult place and made your life inconvenient - not only do you need to go for a not short walk along the road, but the village is somewhat up the hill from the road - you should be looking to that landlord for some accommodation or concession, or be looking elsewhere. He has effectively cancelled you and offered you inferior location.

I agree with Nigel's comment:

you should be looking to that landlord for some accommodation or concession, or be looking elsewhere. He has effectively cancelled you and offered you inferior location.

Your landlord should offer a partial refund (if you choose to stay in Fiumelatte) at best for cancelling the apartment in Varenna.

If he/she is willing to give you a full refund, you should try finding a different accommodation in Varenna, Menaggio or even Bellagio.

We stayed at Albergo Milano, in one of their annex apartments( Casa Gialla), & enjoyed our stay there:http://www.varenna.net

It's best to call the hotel directly because sometimes they get cancellations & they do not show up on their website right away.

Hope it all works out for you!

Don't sleep in the Town of Como.
Too many good alternatives in the area, you want those mid-lake views.

Thanks guys!

I've decided to cancel that reservation with that landlord and have now picked a place in Varenna.

Ps: I love this board!

Elana,

You'll love Varenna! You can take the ferry & visit the other mid-lake villages.

  • Make sure you eat a creamy gelato at 'Gelateria Riva' on the 'passerella', the lakeside promenade connecting the old town to the ferry dock.
  • If you will be traveling via train from Milano Centrale, you'll want
to sit on the left for better lake views :-)

  • Make sure you validate your train ticket before boarding the train and... if you're planning to return to Milan, you may want to buy your return ticket(s) at Milano Centrale, as there is no attendant at the Varenna train station.

  • If you forget to buy your return train tickets, there is a travel
agency down the hill from the station next to Albergo Beretta.

  • Here is the website to check ferry
    schedules:http://www.navlaghi.it/eng/c_illago.html

Enjoy your trip!
