I will be staying in Fiumelatte for 5 nights and I was wondering if there is a SAFE walkway to Varenna. I am aware that it is a 15minute walk, however, I don't want to walk along the roadway at night.
Thanks for any information in advance.

It's almost 2 km. You might need more than 15 min. Looking at the road on Google Street View, it appears that some portions of the highway in Fiumelatte are very narrow with no sidewalks. In between the towns there is a narrow sidewalk on the side of the lake. Make sure you walk close to the walls and against the flow of traffic where there are no sidewalks. I don't know how well lit it is at night in the portion outside the built up area between the two villages, but you should carry a small flashlight, not so much to see where you are stepping but to be more visible to cars at night. I used to walk between close by villages in Italy in youth (before we had our own wheels) at night (sometimes with a bunch of kids) and it is dangerous in some country roads because they are narrow and some Italians drive like maniacs even in those roads. I remember once with a bunch of friends, I must have been 13 or 14, walking in the night between two close-by villages in Tuscany, a Carabinieri patrol car stopped, blinded us with their flood lights and gave us a stern reprimand for walking along the roadway at night (no sidewalks there). Then they escorted us back to the village safely.
