I will be in florence and bologna in a week or so and need a decent gym for workouts. None of the nes I know about in Florence are near the centro, and I know NOTHING about Bologna. Anyone know of a solution? Cate
People seem to forget that they can direct these sorts of questions to the hotel/B&B/apartment owner where they will be staying. They'll know better than anyone on this site about these things. FWIW, there are lots of gyms in Italy, but the ones in the historic centers tend to be fairly small .
i didn't forget; i already asked and got a response from my concierge saying that fitness centers were not near the centro. however, i know that some hotels nearby (in which I am not booked) reference access to nearby fitness centers, so I know they are out there. just don't want to be rude and ask the concierge in a hotel i am not staying in.
I just googled "fitness centers florence italy" and came up with a list of them. You might be able to tell which are close to where you will stay. The one called "Palestre something-or-other" looked good.
Your best bet would be to find a hotel that has a gym. Most gyms won't let you come in for just one or two sessions, though there is one near us that you pay each time you go instead of buying a membership, maybe there is something like that in Florence or Bologna. They will most likely as for a dr's certificate saying it is OK for you to work out (Italians are nuts about these dr's certificates) most likely for legal reasons. Good luck. If nothing else is there a way to modify your workout so you can do it wherever?
Sounds like you were unlucky in reaching a lazy concierge. Check this site for a list of gyms in Florence:
http://www.aboutflorence.com/firenze/Palestre-a-Firenze.html
Or google "firenze palestra" or "bologna palestra". Palestra is the Italian word for "gym". Either query in Google will turn up a Google map that will show you that there are several in the historic center of both cities.
I googled before contacting the concierge. all the gyms I found were outside of the centro. i guess i will be modifying the workout. Thanks for the help.
