First trip to Italy

Hi all! Been reading this forum for a few months and you all have been immensely helpful as I've planned my first trip to Italy (and abroad in general) for my honeymoon. I have a few questions that I could use some help with.

  1. Any recommendations for how much cash to carry daily? I noticed some restaurants are cash-only but is there anything else I should be thinking of to ensure I have enough cash on me?

  2. I booked train tickets through Trenitalia and a month later I got a follow up email that my carriage and seat had been changed. I booked two tickets so it didn't tell me which one of the tickets is changed. I looked up my tickets on the Trenitalia website and they have the original seats listed? I just want to minimize hassle on the train and am a bit stressed at the thought of my seat being double booked or something. Any advice is much appreciated.

  3. I have seen a few people recommend not to fly out of the Venice airport. I had already booked flights by the time I saw this crop up multiple times so I am stuck with that flight. Any guidance for getting to the airport/hiccups to expect? Our flight departs at 11am and we are staying in the San Polo area.

I am sure I'll be back with more questions soon! Thanks :)

I flew out of Venice in April and had no problems. You're fine flying out of Venice. I think the reticence is that Venice flights generally connect in Europe and often leave very early (I had a 6:00 or 6:30 departure).

When I travel, I carry about $100 in cash. If you pay for everything with cash then wear a money belt so you can bring more.
The reason people say don’t fly out of Venice is because you must pay for a costly water taxi if catching an early morning flight. However, buses depart before 6a from Piazzale Roma. If you’re departing on an 11a flight then you will be fine.

Welcome to the forum!

We usually bring about 100 cash euros and then withdraw with our debit card if we need more
Honestly the last 3 or 4 trips we’ve hardly needed much cash
Most everywhere is now tap and pay
You’ll want some cash for small purchases like a gelato or bottle of water, coins for toilets (some not all)

Train tix
Never heard of that happening
Did you reply to their email for clarification?

VCE
You’ll be fine for an 11 am flight-that is probably going to USA?
Be there by 8 -so on a bus or water taxi by 7 will work
There are many threads here addressing transportation to/from VCE
Look for posts by “Aussie”

Enjoy your trip!!

Congrats on the wedding and honeymoon.
When is this trip? How many nights? Are you doing carry-on luggage?
We also don't spend much cash in Italy. Just set up your credit cards in your Apple Wallet, and Tap & Pay. Most businesses have those portable credit card machines.
You have done a lot of research, so be happy to help with any more questions. Venice is magical, just venture a few "blocks" away from the crowds.
Safe travels!

Do you have Trenitalia app on your phone ? If you created an account to buy your tickets, sign in on the app and the tickets and seats will show up there. If you cannot get clarification from Trenitalia before you leave on the trip, just stop by a ticket office and ask them to sort it.

Getting to Venice from Marco Polo Airport. [Make sure you have seats on the right/starboard side of the aircraft, for a view of Venice as you fly into Marco Polo.]
A paper map of Venice is the best three euro you will ever spend. Sure, people say that getting lost in Venice is fun. Getting lost, hauling your luggage and not being able to find your hotel is nobody’s idea of fun. Buy that map at the Tabac or bookshop at Marco Polo.
Do take a look at your hotel website – there may be info there. Otherwise,
1. Water taxi will get you close, maybe to, the door of your hotel. Can carry about ten people, will cost about €140 for the boat. No need to book, taxis are waiting at the Marco Polo dock.
2. Shared water taxi. Minimum of two people. Book in advance, wait at the desk in the terminal for the others sharing the taxi. Costs about €30 per person. Google “shared water taxi Venice”, use the venicelink dot com web site. Will get you to a vaporetto stop near your hotel.
3. Alilaguna ferry, as per below.
4. Bus to Piazale Roma, then walk to your hotel, or take vaporetto to the nearest stop. Buses leave from the outside the terminal, tickets at the machine.
Water transport in Venice.
1. Gondolas. Only for pleasure, not for transport. 90 euro for half an hour for the boat, more for evenings.
2. Traghetto – big gondolas, two oarsmen, about ten passengers, for crossing the Grand Canal. Found at Rialto, San Toma and a couple of other places. Cost 2 euro per trip, can save a heap of walking.
3. Water taxis, which are like a floating limo, costs to match.
4. Vaporettos - ACTV. Are like a floating bus, operate on a bunch of routes. Get the app Chebateo for routes and schedules. Vaps do not service the airport. Vaps are not water taxis.
5. Alilaguna ferries, service the airport, run from Marco Polo via a bunch of stops to the main part of Venice, Murano and Lido. They stop at some, but by no means all, vaporetto stops.

My hotel was a bridge crossing or two from Piazzale Roma. The hotel arranged for a driver to meet us in the hotel lobby and drive us to the airport. We needed to depart prior to the time the bus to the airport started running.

Best train app for Italy IMO is TrenIt! Probably the best in all of Europe.

No cash needed in almost all cases. 100 euros will do you fine. Probably have 90 euros or more to bring home.

Venice airport is great. The city not so much, unless you can avoid peak cruise-ship-unloading times. Then it's magic.

Italy is a spectacular country with more diversity than any other place in Europe. Treasure every single region you visit. My personal favorite is Emilia-Romagna, which I never visited until this summer. But the entire country has so much to offer. Congratulations and buon viaggio!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome and detailed advice! We're going for 12 days in the middle of the month splitting between Rome, Florence, Venice. Hoping to maybe just do one checked bag between us but trying to pack light!

  1. Good to know I do not need much cash. I will just get a little at the airport in case of emergency.

  2. I assumed it was an automated message so I didn't reply when I received it. I just replied we will see if I get a response. I tried the app and it showed me the same thing as the website (my initial seats not the new seat and car from that email). That's on me for not making the account when I purchased the tickets. I will go to the ticket office for assistance, thank you!

  3. Great, feeling much better about getting to the airport! I appreciate all the in-depth info there.

Thanks again everyone for your feedback today and your posts past year as I've been planning! I'll be sure to ask more questions as they come up and share a trip report upon our return!

Just be careful of the atm machines you use. Make sure they are affiliated with a bank. The others charge high service fees. And always indicate you want the transaction in the local currency, not USD. Safe travels!

If possible get some euros before you leave

If not try to wait til you are in town, checked in
Then go find a bank with a Bancomat inside the lobby

Trying to get at airport when you are foggy off a flight can be unsettling

Taxis will take a credit card and so will a train ticket kiosk
