When are you going to Italy? Do you already have plane tickets purchased? Do you need to spend a few days in Rome at the beginning and end or can you group the days together? Do you already have train tickets from Rome to Florence and back? I will take a shot at this assuming you already have plane tickets purchased into and out of Rome:

Friday: arrive in Rome
Saturday: Rome
Sunday: Rome - Family
Monday : early AM train to Venice
Tuesday: Venice
Wednesday: early train to piacenza
Thursday: piacenza in the AM and train to Florence that evening till Sunday
Friday : Florence
Saturday: Florence
Sunday: Florence to Rome
Monday: Rome
Tuesday leave early for states.

If you could fly into Venice and out of Rome, that would save you some hassle. Also, if you head north, you do not want to return to Rome to go to Florence because you will be backtracking and wasting a lot of time. Hope this helps.

Placenza is about an hour from Firenze.

It would be easier to start in Venezia and end in Roma, if you can - no backtracking.

From Venice to Verona are there any quaint vineyards to stop and see???? we are now thinking just venice and verona to relax a bit, worried about spending too much time traveling and not enough time relaxing!!! Verona looks beautiful i'm thinking 1 day venice and maybe 1 1/2 verona? any thoughts???
