First time to Italy, looking for help with my itinerary.

We are landing in Rome on August 31st and we depart Rome on Sept 10th. It will be 4 of us traveling (two couples). we want to explore Rome and can't decide on the remaining way to spend our days. Would you recommend Rome, Florence and Amalfi Coast or Rome, Florence and Venice. I have no idea. Please any suggestions would be great. We can even drop one city.

My vote's for the Rome, Florence and the Amalfi Coast. Stay in Sorrento it's
very nice. From there you can take a tour bus to the Amalfi Coast,( we splurged on a Limo driver for the day) . Sorrento has lots of outdoor shops and restaurants.
You can take a day trip to Capri, and see the Grotto. Awesome Pizza @ Franco's in
the town of Sorrento.

Thanks for your reply. In you opinion is doing those three cities too much, should we drop Florence or fit it in there? I really appreciate any help.

I would keep Florence, spend one full day & night and part of the next day. It's a must see for sure. Spend 3 nights in Sorrento and the rest of your time in Rome.
That's my advice. Have fun !!

From Rome, Amalfi is south, Venice and Florence are north.

It would seem that zig-zaging up and down the peninsula would eat up a good chunk of nine days on the ground.

Amalfi is over-rated anyway.

While I disagree with Ed about Amalfi, I think he's right about the waste of time in transit, when you have a quite brief trip. First thing I would suggest is that you try to get open jaw tickets, if you're going to include Venice, maybe even if not. You could fly out of Florence or Pisa. If you do just Rome and Tuscany (including Florence), you will get a taste of the varied wonders of Italy without running yourselves ragged. Specifically, I recommend a few days in Rome, with daytrips to Ostia and Orvieto. Your time in Tuscany--split up however best suits you-- could include Florence, Siena, and an agriturismo stay with some hill town explorations.

Since this is your first time to Italy, if you are a little nervous I would recommend you make this visit easy on yourselves. Do the Three "biggies" Florence, Rome, and Venice. I recommend you go straight to Florence first because it is less challenging, then tackle Rome, and last relax in least stressful Venice.

While I also love Amalfi - do Rome, Florence, and Venice. Save Sorrento for another trip.

Take your time and enjoy each of the three cities!

Hit the high spots this time, and if you never get back, then you have seen the highlights. Rome,Florence, and Venice would be great. Remember you can daytrip out if you get bored in one place. This way you will have many ideas of places you want to see the next time you are able to go. We have been twice, and we have a notebook ful of ideas for our next trip, which will be soon. Ennjoy. On our first trip to Italy, we actually landed in Rome, drove to Venice, went back to Rome and toured the Amalfi Coast from there in a day trip. It was an exhausting trip, but I would not have changed a thing. I had no regrets about not seeing Florence and was surprised at how I fell in love with the Amalfi Coast. On this trip, we are going to be in Florence but are going back to the Amalfi Coast and Venice again. The Amalfi Coast deserves an overnight stay; however, it can be done in a day trip from Rome. You must decide what is most important to you for your vacation. Do you want to see legendary artwork and architecture? Or some of the most beautiful coastline Italy has to offer? Once you determine what is important, you can better make a decision. I would NOT recommend driving the Amalfi coast. If that is the only way you can see it, I would definitely avoid it. As to Rome and Venice, I could not imagine a trip to Italy without seeing both. Happy Travels!
