First Time Italy -- 11 day itinerary recommendation

My husband and I are planning our first Italy trip from 4/19 to 5/1. We will fly out from San Francisco to Rome, and fly back from Milan to San Francisco on 5/1. We both enjoy arts, history, nature, food and wine. We have total 11 days excluded flight in/out. Currently we are thinking to cover Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan. What's the best the way to distribute our days? Appreciated if you can help with a sample itinerary as our starting point. Also looking for hotel recommendations for each place.
Thanks in advance!

I would pick a different time. April 25 and May 1 are both national holydays and the crowds are always huge. Same for Easter Monday.

May 1 is an holyday all over Europe.

I would drop Venice. Rome (3), Florence (4), Milan (3) is a good 11 days. You don't say when you get there - so it's not clear how many nights you have. If you leave 4/19, you arrive 4/20. If you leave 5/1, it's early.

In addition, you really need to finalize the itinerary. If you are going in 2.5 months, hotels will start to fill. This is not high season, but it is the end of shoulder season.

Ten different people will have ten different suggestions, and none of them may interest you. I suggest making a list of what you want to see in each place, and allot your days that way. Where the forum can be extremely helpful is when you post a detailed plan and have people critique it, such as if x days is enough for your list, etc.
