First time in Italy

Planning to stay ONE WEEK in Italy and go back home to USA from Rome 5/31. Coming from Switzerland by train or bus to maybe Milan and like to see Venice and final destination is Rome. Does it worth spending 1 or 2 day in Milan? Or should I go just to Venice and Rome? Where to stay and go and what to see and what kind of transportation to use? Does it worth to rent a car in Milan and drop off in Rome?

I'd say go straight to Venice. There is an EC train that leaves Lausanne at 8:18 and Montreux at 8:36 that is direct to Venice at 14:40. From Venice there are trains to Rome at least every hour for a 3 3/4 hour trip. Way faster than any car. That will give you about 3 days in Venice and 3 in Rome.

Venice and Rome only. Great advice from Sam. Milan (although a great city) is skippable by comparison on a first trip. No car. A car is a liability in Venice (no roads!) and Rome, which is a nightmare to drive in.

EDIT - meant to add, the trains are faster by far than driving these routes.

You have me confused about your movements/whereabouts on 31/5. In another post you say that you have a long layover at Moscow airport 31/5 on your way to Azerbaijan. In this post you say you will be in Rome 31/5 on your way back to the USA . Could you clarify for us please.

Equally confusing, in one previous post you say you're arriving in Geneva late afternoon on 5/18 for 4-6 days in Switzerland but in another you say you're arriving in Amsterdam at 11:00 on 5/18 and have an 10-hour layover - which wouldn't put you in Geneva in the afternoon of that same day. Which is it?
