first time- 2 couples- mid sept 2 wks advice

have to book and i hate stopover flights but looks like thats the only choice.
ny or newark to florence, rome and amalfi

5 nites florence, 3 nites rome, 5 nites maiori is the plan.

learned a lot from here and youtube and have rick's book but italy is very booked!

advice on what's a must in florence, best way to see tuscany countryside, which are best day trips...cinque terre, siena, pisa...then i read lucca? prob pick tours with guide so we know what we're seeing/doing?

rome - know we have to book tickets now

amalfi coast- what's the best schedule for 5 days?

any advice on booking flights? or is it just a crap shoot?
also, now read carryon is best way to go but for 2 weeks a carry on doesn't offer much.
also want to shop

thanks for tips, any restaurant recommendations in each city...away from tourist traps...best gelato in town, etc.
whatever i should know what to avoid or what is a must see/do before we finish planning.

None of the NYC airports have direct flights to Rome? I find that odd.

Fly NYC to Rome. Train same day to Florence, then to Amalfi coast area, and finish in Rome for the flight back. That should eliminate the flight stopovers.

If you are planning for travel in the next 6-8 weeks, you are way behind on booking lodging and flights. Bite bullet, "just do it"
