First Night dinner in Rome

We will be arriving in Rome for the first time in October. Any recommendations for our first nights dinner when we will be jet lagged and want a good sit down meal, something simple but easy to order? We are staying in an apartment near the Campo de Fiori area and will be checking in at 5:00pm.

We had several lovely dinners near the Campo - Emma is a "pizzaria" but much more - a full menu and all very fresh and lovely. Also, our best meal was at Renato e Louisa between the Campo and Piazza Navona. Both really wonderful!!
Rome is lovely!

Also --- Keep in mind that while there are some restaurants that are open all the time, many do not open for dinner until 7:30. Try and call ahead before you leave home and secure a table at 8:00. I am sure it wil be less busy in October but the restaurants always appreciate a reservation.

I agree with Campo de Fiore. There are several restaurants there with outdoor seating. If the weather is cool, they will have heaters as well. Enjoy!

Pizzeria Emma is perhaps the most over-rated pizzeria I have visited in more than 3 years of eating pizza in Roma. Instead, try the family trattoria Antica Taverna, located about a 10-minute walk from Camp dei Fiori in Via Monte Giordano. They are open early, indeed 12:00-24:00, but serve good Roman cuisine, simply, inexpensively, and with great friendliness. We eat there with locals many nights, including the Carabinieri! Yes, there are tourists, too, and will be more if I don't quit telling people about it! Do try to make a reservation. You can do so online at their site.

As a side note, I recently recommended to visitors from the U.S. that we meet there, but their hotelier said no, don't go there, eat downstairs at Osteria da Fortunata. The food was fine, but the service was unbelievably slow, and the prices were insane.

Thanks for 3 great suggestions, we will probably try them all. Antica Taverna sounds just like what i had in mind. Thanks again, Barbara

I very much liked the neighborhood over the bridge from Campo de Fiori (over Ponte Sisto). Trastevere had a lot of nice places to eat and drink that are open late also and it seemed a little cheaper than across the bridge. A local recommended me a place called Da Augusto (Piazza de Renzi, 15), which was not only good food but it was an experience. It felt like eating in someone's living room. There are places with better wine, but it is a good place to eat. I enjoyed a meal also at Pierluigi (P.zza de Ricci, 144,) very near to Campo de Fiori, and was very pleased, even though the price was pricey! I liked it a lot, but for my budget was happier to walk the extra 5-10 min to Trastevere for lower prices to choose from. It is also an area with many bars serving good aperitivo buffets and for only maybe 2 euros more than the price of your drink you can eat at the buffet. It is a good, cheap way to have a snack, but filling if maybe you are hungry a bit before the dinner time down there. Many choices!
