First leg of trip - which lake makes the most sense, or can we not go wrong?

Hi all, I wanted to pick a few brains on the lake region. My spouse and I will be flying in and out of Milan (MXP) for a five-week Europe trip. We have planned so far to spend 1.5 days (2 nights) Milan, and we are thinking we could spend 3 days (and 2 nights) at one of the lakes (looking at Maggiore or Como but open to others) before we take a late flight to Spain from Bergamo (BGY).

Since we are going to be in Europe so long, we don't want to blow our budget out of the water during our stay in the lake region. Does one lake make more sense than the other in terms of our itinerary, or one more budget-friendly than the other?

Sorry that this is so open-ended, but hoping someone can help steer us in the right direction as we think this through!

Varenna, on Lake Como, to Bergamo is the easiest train route, a train every hour and taking 1 1/4 hour with a train change in Lecco.

In case you are not aware, Bergamo itself has a very visit-worthy historic district.
