My husband is a first generation American. His father was from Caltanissetta, Sicily and his mother was from Cosenza, Italy. The focus of our family trip will be to visit both areas while at the same time getting our first taste of as much of Italy as possible.
We are traveling in June 2014 with our two sons ages 24, and 19. It is our hope to "stay off the beaten path" as much as possible so that we can interact with the people of Italy! My husband speaks Italian, so this is especially important to him.
For our itinerary, I am considering:
Flying into Milan then traveling to a BB in the Cinque Terre/ Tuscany area for 3 nights (BB suggestions?)
Rome for 2 days (BB suggestions?)
Sorrento 3 days with a one day trip to Cosenza (Sorrento BB suggestions?)
Sicily 4 days Really needing help here...fly into Messina? Palermo? 1 day trip to Caltanissetta. We would love to find a wonderful BB that would serve as a home base for at least 2 nights.
We will return to the US from Sicily.
Neither my husband nor I have traveled out of the US.
Thanks for any and all suggestions!
