First day in Rome- what to do before tour starts

We are on a Traflagar Tour starting this Sunday. Our first day is entirely free except for a welcome drink around 6pm.

I hope to hit our hotel (near Stazione Centrale Roma termini- east side of termini) around 11 am. I was planning to walk to the St Maria Maggiore area to spend a few hours. Then back to the hotel and after the welcoming drink, hitting the metro to the spanish step areas for an evening walk.

Never been to Rome so I am soliciting comments on the practicality of this plan. Thanks all.

It's a good plan. St Maria Maggiore is a short walk from your hotel, and you can take metro line A to the Spagna stop for the Steps.

I agree with Kent - you'll find Rome a very easy town to walk in and around! Walking is the best way to see this city as there are many "sites" or "ruins" scattered throughout neighborhoods!

And since you're going to be over at the Spanish Steps that evening make a reservation at Nino... one street over from the steps! Great white bean soup! (at Via Borgognona, 11; phone +39 (06) 679 5676)

Ciao,
