Hello, we are going to be in Florence for 5 days. We arrive on a Sunday and have nothing planned that day, or the following day (Monday). We are doing "Florence in a Day" 8 hour tour on day 3, and visiting Ruffino Winery Day 4. We are looking for suggestions of what we should do on our first full day in Florence (and half day Sunday) ? We love history and wines. Thank you.
Is this the tour you'll be talking? It goes into the Accademia and Uffizi, and walks past the Duomo, Baptistry, Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio, and other places. Depending on your interests and energy, you could go inside buildings the tour will take you outside, like the Duomo, Baptistry, Duomo Museum, Bargello Gallery, Medici Tombs, Medici Palace, Santa Croce, Palazzo Vecchio, Galileo Museum, Pitti Palace, Or San Michele, and others I haven't thought of just now. Here are our host's suggestions for what to see in Florence.
Florence is a great place to do some walking. I suggest doing just that on your first day since your plans gets more detailed later. Both sides of the Arno are worth meandering around, maybe even trek up to Piazza Michaelangelo for the view (don't ignore the beautiful church just above the Piazza). There are plenty of places to stop for a glass of wine, a gelato, a relaing lunch . . . and maybe more wine.
I wholeheartedly endorse Robert's suggestion. This would be a good chance to get off the well beaten tourist path. Plan to end up at Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset.
I agree that just meandering on day one would be a great way to get familiar with this beautiful city. But given that I am a history teacher, I would likely duck into a museum too. A couple of my favorites are the Bargello and Museo Galileo, and I believe both are open on Sundays.
Thanks everyone :)
The Leather School is a fun place to spend some time.
