We have hotel reservations at the Hotel Plaza Venice. We are taking the train from Firenze to Venice. Which train station arrives at that hotel?
from www.hotelplazavenice.com:
"Hotel Plaza is situated directly opposite Venice-Mestre’s railway station"
Assuming that's the same place, I'd say you want to get off at the Mestre station, which is BEFORE you cross the lagoon into Venice proper.
Vera - Not to be too nit picky, but if you can get out of your reservation at the Hotel Plaza, please consider it.
For the best experience in Venice, you really want to stay in Venice proper. It will be much more enjoyable, venice is truly magical early in the morning and at night when all the day trippers are gone.
while it is true that you will be just a short train ride away, it really will make a big difference in your experience of Venice.
there a re a number of quaint, charming, small hotels in Venice that you should be able to find.
Try www.venere.com.
Vera, I second Ron's comments for the true Venetian experience!
I agree...do NOT stay in Mestre. Venice is magical and worth whatever extra it may cost. I suggest the neighborhood of Canareggio as the best place to sleep.

Stay in Venezia...forget Mestre. Venezia after 7 p.m. is wonderful. All of the day trippers will have departed and the Venetians emerge to reclaim their city. The city itself is beautiful at night with lights reflecting from the canals.
Two years ago we wondered around through the Jewish Ghetto section after dinner and we had the place to ourselves. We could hear the Venetians talking and rattling their plates as they had dinner in their apartments.
Try using venere.com to find a hotel in Venezia. It is a very useful and provides customer reviews of each property. It is like the Expedia of Europe.
Buon viaggio,

Vera,
I agree with the others - definitely stay IN Venice and not in Mestre!
Check the Guidebook for Hotel listings in the price range and neighborhood that appeal to you.
Happy travels!
Vera,
Staying off of the island of Venice proper would be like travelling to New York City, but staying in Brooklyn. I love Brooklyn, but you'd have to consider leaving the island of Manhattan at some point to commute back to your accomodations.
Sorry for the drawn out analogy, but the most magical times, especially in a special city like Venice, happen after the day-trippers leave...and that would be you.
Hope you can change your reservation, and have a wonderful time.
