Firenze Rifredi to Siena?

We arrive mid-afternoon on a Thursday at FLR (from Atlanta) heading to Siena first and ending our trip with several nights in Florence later. I was gathering information on the shuttle from FLR to Firenze S. M. N to begin train or bus to Siena when I realized that the train stops at Rifredi station. It appears to me that we could taxi or bus to Rifredi and train to Siena from there. Could somebody please verify this for me? I WILL be jet-lagged so I want to nail down all the details on this leg of the trip. Thank you!

(I panicked when the server was down - how do you travel to Italy without the Rick Steves board? ;) Christopher Columbus really was an adventurer!)

Yes, trains from Firenze SMN to Siena stop at Rifredi en route. Rifredi is very close to FLR airport as the bird fly, but the only practical way to get there from the airport is by taxi. Also, while you can travel to Siena on buses from the bus station on the side of SMN railway station, from Rifredi the only option is train; and as you know trains arrive in Siena at the railway station, downhill from the city, while buses arrive near the center.

Taking the train from Rifredi instead of SMN may shave a few minutes from your itinerary or not - it depends on exact time you are arriving. SMN is more distant, but not dramatically so.

Susan,

As lachera mentioned, you can travel either from Rifredi or SMN to Siena OR you can take a Taxi to the Bus station in Florence, and use that method. if you can connect with one of the Corse Rapide buses, the trip will be about 1H:15M, and you'll be dropped in Piazza Gramsci which is in the main part of the town. If you travel by train, you'll be dropped at the bottom of the hill and will have to take a Taxi up to Siena.

In a jet-lagged state, I'd highly recommend taking a Taxi from FLR to whichever transportation station you decide to use. As i recall, they have a flat rate to central Florence, but I can't remember what the amount is?

If you decide to travel by train, you'll likely be using a Regionale train, so BE SURE to validate your ticket prior to boarding or you'll risk a hefty fine which will be collected on the spot. Travel time by train is 1H:28M.
