I have read that we can purchase the Friend of the Uffizi pass, 100 euros for a family of four. Has anyone done this; do you recommend purchasing ahead of time or when in Florence? OR is it preferable to purchase the Firenze Card? We have two teenagers under the age of 18. Thank you
It depends on what you want to do. I join the friends of the Uffizi each trip (the Italian organization, not its US counterpart) because it provides unlimited access to the state museums; therefore it lets me visit the Uffizi multiple times. The Florence card is more expensive and only allows one entry at each site. However it does cover some additional sites.
So I would suggest comparing the list of sites covered by each card and determining whether you will want to enter a specific site multiple times. That will help you decide which will work best for you.
This question came up recently on another thread so I'm copy/pasting my answer with edits:
The Friends of the Uffizi card worked really well for my husband and I: highly recommend!
We bought ours at the welcome desk at the Uffizi when we got into Florence:

This pass is especially nice if you're going to be in Florence for over 3 days and, unlike the Firenze card, allows multiple visits to any of the attractions it covers: nice for breaking a large museum into 2 visits if desired. Do be aware, though, that it doesn't cover entry fees to every attraction - such as Santa Croce or the Baptistry at the Duomo. Even paying for those things individually, you'll still come out ahead, though. Florence is such a walkable city that we wouldn't have gotten the good of the transport piece of the Firenze Card.
DO remember to bring identification along when you go to apply for your card.
Thanks, ladies.
Laura, I should have mentioned that your young people will be admitted free to the Italian State Museums in Florence - which include the Uffizi, Accademia, Pitti Palace, Bargello and a few others - for free without a pass. Still, my husband and I bought a family membership for just the two of us (no kids along) as it was less expensive than 2 Firenze cards, and a little less expensive than 2 individual Uffizi memberships. So, even if you find you don't need it often for the kids, it's still worth the purchase. Does that make sense?
