Trying to decide whether to get the Firenze card. We have already been to the Accademia and Uffizi. Iis it needed to “skip the line” at the Duomo, Galileo Museum, Museum of San Marco, Medici Chapel, etc. or is it a waste of money? As always, your input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
If you've been to both museums and don't plan on going back, then I would just do a straight calculation on things I want to visit, their costs, and compare with the card.
We bought the card in 2017 for a 3 days stay but I had done a cost comparison before. Plus, saving time waiting in line at both museums. It was a no Brainer for us.
We used the Firenze Card last year and loved it, though we did do Uffizi and Accademia. No plans for a repeat visit or short stop in? [I can’t visit Florence without a visit to Uffizi, no matter how many times I’ve been there].
I would do the cost calculation as suggested but also take into consideration the convenience and ‘fastpass’ factor, which seems to be important to you. We’ve definitely bought similar passes in the past elsewhere, even knowing we saved no money or perhaps even overpaid slightly, because convenience was more important to us than paying a few extra euro. Cost is less important to us (within reason) vs ability to efficiently use time wisely. Your mileage (and budget) may very there.
Personally, buying the Firenze Card allowed us and encouraged us to do more than we would have otherwise. I felt I got to know Florence better because of it. I really loved the Pitti Palace and Palazzo Vechio and Santa Maria Novella. San Marco was great and the Brancacci Chapel was another personal favorite. We did use it enough that we saved money.
That being said, none of the things you mentioned in your original post should have too much of a line, if that’s what you’re worried about. For the Duomo climb, you can always just reserve your time/buy your ticket in advance rather than going the Firenze Card route, as that’s the one place you’d run into issues.
I'd go with Claude's method of determining value by doing the math. What with the fairly recent seasonal price increase for the Uffizi - which increased the price for the Firenzecard as well - I'm almost sure that if you're not going to get your 85€ (or 92€ if you add transit privileges) out of it if not doing that one.
Do read the fine print, meaning the FAQs, for the Firenzecard carefully. For instance, you must still make prior reservations to climb the dome of the duomo, and there is no "skip the line" access to the basilica itself. You can purchase a combo ticket to the duomo complex separately if you decide against the pass. Same with the Pitti complex.
We did the Uffizi, Accademia, Duomo, baptistry, Medici Chapels (underwhelmed by those), Bargello, San Marco, Pitti and some other attractions a few years ago with a pass that's no longer available, and the only 2 of them with ticket queues long enough to worry about were the Uffizi and Accademia.
Laura and Kathy,
Thanks for the input. Cost wise it doesn't make sense to get the card, especially if it went up to 85 euro. Our main concern was time savings but if these are not places where one would expect a wait then I think we may skip it unless I can find more hours in Florence to revisit some of the places we saw last year. My husband wants to go on another wine tour so are missing one day in Florence.
Ciao!
Diane
Here's the website for the Firenzecard with prices and details, if you haven't taken a look at it yet.
Without the Accademia & Uffizi in the mix I wouldn’t bother. I don’t recall any significant line skipping needed or available at other sights where the card came in handy. That convenience aside, you have to do a lot to see the savings.
