Finding a village base in Northern Italy

I'm planning to travel with my mom in italy soon, and we want to base in villages and small towns, rather than cities. We plan to stay in Lake Como, where I am hoping to find a village that is less full of staircases than Varenna, to help my Mom get around. Your advice as to best Como town for least stairs is appreciated.

We plan to also stay in Borolo and explore the Piedmont area. We plan to drive for most of this trip.

I'm looking for one other village location in northern italy where we can enjoy another northern italy location. I've considered Lake Gordo, with a day trip to Verona. Or perhaps we could return to Cince Terre, wlhich we visited before briefly. Heading west would be easier, because we plan to continue our tour in France.

I've had great advice from this forum, thanks in advance for your thoughtful suggestions.
Best,
Scott

A small town I really love in North Western Italy is Lake Orta.
I was there on the RS Village Italy trip and then stayed 2 more days.
It is just charming and a wonderful place to walk around. You can take
a small boat out to the island in the center of the lake and visit the church and then
walk the path of silence/solitude that goes around the edges of the island.

You may want to stay in Menaggio. There is the Hotel Du Lac in the center of the square and they have an elevator…only three floors. It is part of the Golden Triangle…Menaggio, Varenna, and Bellagio. There is also a website www.Happyholidayhomes.com and they offer properties to rent for as little or long as you like. They provide details about the property as to if a car is needed as well as how many steps there are to get to the property. I think you can filter your needs. Love, love, love Lake Como!

Scott,
My favorite lake is Lake Maggiorie. I have stayed in Stresa and Cannobio along this wonderful lake. If you need any hotel recommendations, let me know. Out of Stresa you can take the boats to the many islands in the lake. It's a wonderful location with lots to do.
