Went back and forth about my honeymoon destination, and decided on Italy for 16 days. 14 days of real vacation, as 2 will be traveling from Michigan. It will be Early June. I've been to Venice, Rome, and Florence, but my fiancé has never been. I'm thinking the following itinerary Fly into Venice, 2 days Train to Florence 1 Day Cinqe Terre 2 Days Rome 4 days
Amalfi Coast 5 days How does this sound, is this relaxing enough? I know my fiancé really wants to relax, that's why I chose Amalfi at the end so we can go to a nice beach in Capri.
Bryan, With such a short time frame and considering the occasion, my suggestion would be to "slow down" a bit so that the trip is less hurried and more relaxing. Although I'm really reluctant to say this, IMO it would be a good idea to skip the Cinque Terre this time. Although travel there is a bit more "challenging", I'd keep the Amalfi Coast as neither of you has been there yet. Perhaps something like this would work: > Day 1 - Depart U.S. > Day 2 - Arrive Venice > Day 3 - Venice (keep the pace a bit slower for the first day, as you'll still be suffering jet lag). > Day 4 - Venice > Day 5 - Train to Florence (depart ~noon). > Day 6 - Florence (even if you're not a huge fan of Renaissance Art, it's a beautiful city.) > Day 7 - Train to Rome (again, depart ~noon) > Day 8 - Rome > Day 9 - Rome > Day 10 - Rome > Day 11 - Train to Napoli, transfer to Circumvesuviana, travel to Sorrento (depart ~10:00) > Day 12 - Sorrento & Amalfi Coast (Pompeii & Herculaneum?) > Day 13 - Sorrento & Amalfi Coast (Capri?) > Day 14 - Sorrento & Amalfi Coast (Positano, Ravello or Amalfi?) > Day 15 - Sorrento (morning), Train to Rome (spend last night in Rome) > Day 16 - Flight home. This is only one possibility, but it covers most of the desired places. If your budget will allow, I'd highly recommend dining at L'Antica Trattoria in Sorrento, perhaps on your last night there. It's not cheap, but I'm sure it would be memorable. I'd suggest packing along a copy of the Italy 2012 Guidebook, as I've found it's a valuable resource during trips. Congratulations and happy travels!
The first part sounds very rushed. You will mostly be dealing with transporting to the next place. You will be tired when you arrive in Venice. Remember that 2 nights in a place is only one full day. You have been to Venice, Florence and Rome. Does your fiancé want to see those places? I would let her decide if it's worth rushing around to spend a partial day in Florence. If she does want to see Florence I would consider cutting out the Cinque Terre, since you will be going to the Amalfi Coast. Spend 3 nights in Venice and 2 nights in Florence. If you really want to be more relaxed and not rush around so much, limit yourself to Venice, one other place and the Amalfi Coast.
First of all, Congrats! Like the previous poster indicated, the first part of your trip is a bit rushed. Arriving in Venice and finding your way to your hotel, with jet lag, could be long and frustrating. Adding one more night in Venice would be more relaxing. Then add a day in Florence and save Cinque Terre for your next trip. If you would like to experience the quaintness and relaxing pace of a hilltown, stop in Orvieto for 1 night on your way to Rome. It's easily accessible by train and then you take a funicular up to the town. To keep your 5 days in Amalfi, scale Rome down to 3 nights. Have a wonderful trip!
as other's have stated the first part of the trip is a bit rushed
Ken's suggestions are very good
I think you should put the relaxing part at the beginning of your trip, to get over jet lag. Venice is a great place to recover from j.l., but I would do at least two nights there (not sure whether your 2 days is actually 2 nights). Ken's suggestions are indeed very good. Happy travels.
I agree with the other posters, the front part is rushed. Remember if you are flying in, you will be dealing with jet lag and I would want at least one full day in Venice, so make that 3 days there. Then you'll want a few days in Florence. If you are visiting the Amalfi Coast, I would skip Cinque Terre to add more days to Florence. My first trip was rushed and then I learned to take more time, you get to see and enjoy more.
I would cut one destination from your itinerary.
Glad to see you're going to Sorrento, our favorite place in Italy. The most relaxing place I've ever been. Be sure though to schedule time to actually enjoy the town itself, it's charming. I'd skip Capri - expensive to get there, crowded - we didn't like it. A boat to Positano from Sorrento and back... very fun, very romantic.
Always listen to Ken. He is very knowledgeable.
