FINALLY - 2 years later - launch !!

Hello Everyone:

Hope this note finds you all well and safe from these scourges that seem to plague us all.
My trip two years ago was cancelled by COVID - rescheduled for 12 months later - cancelled again.
SO - here we are: I decided 6 months ago to take this trip. I was in miserable physical condition as a result of an indulgent lifestyle. 6 months in the gym - 199 pounds to 182 - waist from 39" to 33" - ready to travel. :-)
Here is the new journey: (leaving tomorrow morning - so - comments may not render results. :-)
Thanking you in advance for all the wonderful advice received in this forum -

Packing light following Rick Steves guide for the first time. Interesting.

THE FAREWELL TOUR

Comment:
I love the old trains. Having traveled years ago - when a family could purchase a sleeping quarters - ensuite- the new bullet rains are just not appealing. Although I love anything with power - the 200 MPH is usually laid out on flat ground and packed with business travelers. The old trains - rambling along between neighborhoods with local families - seem to meander - to belong - to be a part of the human landscape. This journey will encompass 8 trains in three countries - 1,756 miles - with stops in six places.
It will probably be my last trip. 60 years have gone by quickly since my first journey on this interesting continent.
Again - thank you all for the insight and advice received these many months, Bon Voyage.
Calvin.

Calvin, in all your exuberance you started the same thread twice.

"THE FAREWELL TOUR" - I certainly hope not. Your posts are so much fun.

Hello All :
We made the trip. Remarkable.
We followed Ricks advice on travel light utilizing his suitcases for the purpose.
IT WORKED! I was HIGHLY skeptical - what a relief to just have the one carry on bag.
Did notice it is an almost universally accepted practice in all of Europe.
Observations:
Welcome to Italy - its all uphill.
The roads in England were designed for one car at a time - going one way.
The 15 hour flight from Doha, Qatar to Dallas is long.
Do not arrive at Stonehenge - 3 hour drive - 10 minutes after 3:00 PM without a "booking"- public entry ends at 3:00 PM
There really are pickpockets in Marseilles.
The majority of Europeans eat supper at bedtime.
Do not arrive at Heathrow airport without a "booking" for your Covid test.
If you are right handed - a stick shift on your rental car is going to be interesting.
In England, There is a round-a-bout every 200 feet.
The 12-14 hour "walking tour" from Florence to Medieval villages is an Olympic event.

All in all - the "Farewell Tour" was worth the effort.
Thanks to everyone that contributed their experiences as we shaped the journey.
Bon Voyage.

Calvin, so glad you had a great trip! We're in Italy now and struggling to fit in to the local eating schedule :) Starting dinner at 8pm with a meal that lasts generally two hours is at least 1 hour past my bedtime.

Your enthusiasm bursts off the page! Glad it went well. Curious - why are you calling it The Farewell Tour?
