Hello,
My husband, myself and our 25yr old daughter are travelling from T.O May 19th -Jun 3rd.
May 20 Venice 3 nights
May 23 Florence 3 nights
May 26 Tuscany staying at La Coppa in Asciano for 5 nights.
May 31 Rome 3 nights
When we arrive in Venice, I'd like the quickest route to our B&B Corte Campana Venezia. Do you recommend a private water taxi to our hotel? If so can this be booked online, or when we arrive?
May 22, train from Venice to Florence to stay at airbnb Ponte Vecchio Apartments for 3 nights. Are there certain trains and booking companies that are better than others? T
Then we want to rent a car in Florence and drive to our agritourism La Coppa in Asciano for 5 nights.
I've read multiple threads on car rentals. Here is what we are thinking. Pick up car from the Florence downtown office, and drop it off in Chuisi before we take the train to Rome.
Does this make most sense?
Thanks Everyone for your help, I couldn't manage these trips on my own.
Kelly
Why add a step, transfer luggageetc. If you don’t want to drive into Rome, drop the car off at FCO, taxi to hotel. Flat rate.
Hello klarmour98, this sounds like a classic trip,
When you arrive you can either walk to the main dock and take the vaporetto (water bus) or book a private water taxi which is much more expensive. Rates are set and posted on the water taxis just like a regular taxi. You should just be able to walk up and take the next available one at the water taxi dock - not need to worry about booking. The cost of a taxis is probably going to be more in the range of ~100e versus ~28e or so for a single bus ride for 3 people.
I stayed at (the lovely) Corte Campana which is just off the St Marks so it's easy destination on several vaporetto lines. They have very good and detailed walking instructions on their website from the vaporetto stop. One advantage of the water taxi is that they can get closer to the BnB itself but that depends on know which small dock is closest and the tides because if it is low water the stone steps docks can be at an inconvenient height - especially with luggage. I think most people opt for the vaporetto - you would want to decide if you want a multi-day pass at that moment and buy that instead of a single ticket when you are at the dock.
When it comes to fast trains there are two options - Italotreno vs Frecciarossa. You can compare and contrast prices between private italo and Trenitalia owned frecciarossa and I'm sure people have opinions I just always book through Trenitalia because you can book both regioanale and fast trains. It's <2.5 hours on the train so I'm wouldn't sweat the details - book whichever one has a direct train at the time it works for you and choose seats which work for you.
Do book fast trains ahead of time because they become more expensive - especially next or same day tickets. Regionale train tickets do not change prices and do not have assigned seats so there is no reason to book ahead. As my wife and I say the only class is "get our butt on the train" class on local trains.
Hope that helps - sounds like a great trip!

Trenitalia or ItaloTreno are the actual train companies
Both have easy to use apps

When you arrive you can either walk to the main dock and take the
vaporetto (water bus)
There are no vaporettos from the airport
Water taxi, Alilaguna boats or bus to Piazalle Roma then vaporetto are your options
Without knowing where your accommodation is in Venice, can’ advise on how best to get there. Water taxi is most expensive but probably most convenient after a transatlantic flight. Otherwise it’s a bus from airport into Venice and then vaporetto.
Use the trenitalia.com website for train bookings, just make sure to use the Italian names (veniza, Firenze) for departure and destination. As an alternative there is Italiarail.com. I’ve only traveled Trenitalia, on the fast train from Rome to Naples, which was superb, fast, smooth and clean. Italian trains are excellent.
Have never been to Florence but It seems driving in Florence is difficult due to restricted traffic zones, so maybe consider taxi from your hotel to Florence airport for vehicle pick-up. Then no chance of an unexpected fine turning up a year
Why not drop the car off at FCO and take a €50 taxi ride into your hotel in Rome?
Edited to add: as you are in the St Marks area the Alilaguna water bus might be best to get to your hotel.
Italiarail is a reseller
Use the official sites I posted above
Use Roberto’s directions for leaving Florence and you’ll be fine
Airport is opposite direction from where you want to go
ChristineH is correct of course, I jumped ahead to arriving at arriving on the main island as you do from the train station or having taken the bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma.
When you arrive you can either walk to the main dock and take the vaporetto (water bus)

You could take a water taxi from the airport but that will definitely be at least 140e and easily more. If you wanted to do this I would consider booking in advance. (I have done this to the airport for a very early flight, but I would not pay that just for the convenience.)
LINEA BLU on Alilaguna does get to San Marco eventually but it take 1:20 to make the trip.
Sorry for any confusion, thanks ChristineH,

No problem Tod
I figured that’s what you meant

You can use the link I posted above to see what water taxi will be
Should be 129 euros
There are also “shared” water taxis I believe that you can book at the airport
That would save a few euros
Arriving in or leaving Venice via water taxi is a really fantastic experience.
We had an OK experience on the Alilaguna boat but others will tell you it’s not so pleasant as you are down below, no view, etc.
We were allowed to stand up outside so it was fine.
Here is info on Alilaguna
you want the Linea Blu or Linea Rossa line if your hotel is near San Marco

Whichever water transport you choose- both are easy to find at airport. There are signs directing you to docks, moving sidewalks now and all!
