Final Italy itinerary... which city to remove?

Thank you all for your help with my itinerary. I have tentatively settled on the cities to visit. I do feel like I'm a bit rushed at this point and want to know if I should remove a place from the trip.

I've heard Siena is amazing... I am considering removing Florence entirely and just doing: Rome, Venice, Siena and Cinque Terre. What is your opnion? It is looking very hectic at the moment (what I have is below) and I want to make sure I am taking the time to relax on my vacation too! Please weigh in on this itinerary. I'd love suggestions on whether this will be good. Please note that I am not a checkbox sightseer. I will not be rushing to see every monument and attraction. Rather exploring, walking, hiking etc. etc. Thanks in advance :)

24-May Day 1 Rome (arrive at noon) – stay booked
25-May Day 2 Rome – stay booked
26-May Day 3 Rome – stay booked
27-May 4 Day 4 Rome-Venice
28-May 5 Day 5 Venice
29-May 6 Day 6 Venice
30-May 7 Day 7 Venice to Florence
31-May 8 Day 8 Florence
1-Jun 9 Day 9 Florence (day trip to Siena)
2-Jun 10 Day 10 Florence to Cinque Terre - stay booked
3-Jun 11 Day 11 Cinque Terre - stay booked
4-Jun 12 Day 12 Cinque Terre - stay booked
5-Jun 13 Day 13 Cinque Terre - Rome
6-Jun 14 Day 14 Rome (depart 2 pm)

Your itinerary looks pretty good to me. It's true that Siena is very nice, but I wouldn't exchange it with Florence if this your first time to Italy... unless your intention is to rent a car and stay in an agriturismo outside of Siena. One super easy day trip you could easily add is to stop in Pisa for a few hours on your way to Cinque Terre.

I wouldn't remove Florence. There are wonderful art museums and churches to visit. Maybe cut off a day of your Cinque Terre stay.

Thank you! I will leave it as is. I cannot remove a night from Cinque Terre as my stay is already booked. I wanted to have some relaxation time before I leave which is why I have 3 nights.

Thanks all! :)

I agree that your plan is comfortable as-is, with three nights at each stop and one last night in Rome.

Since you've planned Siena as a day trip from Florence, you can decided, pretty much at the last minute, to do it or not. (I wouldn't.) Just as a footnote, it's a problem with 21st century American language usage that superlatives are used very loosely; e.g., "amazing." I think Siena is interesting, but not amazing. I'd save that word for Florence, Rome, and Venice, just to name a few "amazing " places in Italy. And, while I'm throwing around my opinions, I think it's too bad that your CT reservations are set. It looks to me like you have more real time there than in Rome.

If you'd rather base yourself in Siena, you could always day trip to Florence. Overall though, I think your plan looks great, and not too hectic at all. I'm envious!

Your itinerary looks good. I suggest keeping the daytrip to Siena as it makes a good contrast to Florence (the two were rivals for centuries). Siena is medieval in character, Florence blossomed in the Renaissance. You may be amazed by them both.

It sounds as if you can't change this part of your itinerary but for others reading this, it would be best if you could fly into Venice and depart from Rome, as opposed to starting and finishing both in Rome. As it is, I'm just so happy not to see 1 night here, 2 nights there, 1 night someplace else, as so often happens by people who do indeed approach travel as "checking off a list."

Have a great time! You can use your return flight to start planning your next trip to that beautiful country.

With your plan, I think it's easier (or at least simpler) to stay in Florence than Siena, because of the train connections (which Siena doesn't have). Do spend a day in Siena (the bus stop is next to the train station). Then you'll know where you prefer to stay next time.

Looks good the way you have it. Someone mentioned stopping in Pisa on Day 10. I would receommend that too. There is a luggage storage at the Pisa Train station. you only need a couple of hours in Pisa. Buses run regularly from the train station to the leaning tower. We split a cab back to the train station afterwards with a couple from germany we meet.

On your next trip do consider flying open jaw airfare and not round trip into and out of Rome. You can save yourself the extra hours of traveling on a day. Fly into Venice and start there. Work south and put Rome at the end of your trip and fly back to the states from Rome.

Thanks Robert! Yes, not getting an open jaw flight was a complete oversight. I saw a great flight deal and jumped on it. Next time!
