My husband and I will be in Florence for 5 days/nights and want to book a self- drive group Fiat tour around the Florence countryside. I see you can book directly with a company called Walkabout Florence or thru Viator Tours. They both use the same vintage Fiat company, Italian Wheels Fiat 500. There is a $20 plus difference. Has anyone done this and would you recommend one group over the other? I love RS travel forum. So many questions, and just at many answers.....
The 4 hour tour costs about 170 Euros. While I'm sure it would be a nice experience, you could get a car and private tour guide to chauffeur you around the region for the same price.
Or, you could rent a modern brand new Fiat 500 for 63 Euros for a whole week at Hertz in Florence center city.
Before deciding to chaffeur yourself, consider the rather stringent traffic restrictions on driving in the centre of Florence. ZTL, for "Zona Traffico Limitato," looks complicated and can change according to the season.
Here is some information although I can't tell how up-to-date: http://www.florence-on-line.com/maps-of-florence/florence-driving-map-ztl.html
For less than €50 a day (inclusive of no deductible insurance) you can rent a compact car the size of a VW Golf. For €10-15 more you can have a mid size car the size of a VW Passat. Add another €50 for 25 liters of diesel fuel (good for 400km) plus some possible tolls and you have wheels for 24 hours.
The problem is we don't want to rent a car and drive ourselves. We don't feel comfortable doing that. I am checking on the Tours by Roberto, recommended by Rick Steves. Anybody have thoughts on that?
Driving in Tuscany is not really difficult. It would be like driving on curvy two lane highways anywhere else. But if you don't feel comfortable and prefer to be driven you can search some options on viator.com:
