Few questions on travelling in Italy.

Hi, i will be traveling in italy for the first time. As my previous post quite lengthy, i decided to start on a new thread.

These are my questions:

  1. I will be arriving to Bolzano from Florence at 1548hrs. The next bus to Ortisei according to the schedule is 1602 and 1628. What if the bus are packed? Is the bus a first come first serve basis?

  2. I will be taking the train for a ride from Tirano to Chur and return. Im planning to buy the SWISS DAY PASS and take the regional train instead of Bernina Express to save some money. On the website, theres a few options, what is:

a) reduced priced with halffare travelcard?
b)full price without the half fare travel card?

is there a big difference between 2nd class and 1st class? am i not be able to enjoy the scenery with 2nd class? the price diff are big. which class should i take?

On your first question, the buses can get full but usually there is room for everyone. Don’t waste anytime getting to the bus stop (a short walk to the right as you exit the station) and start or join the queue. You might have to be a bit assertive as people tend to group, not line up. Luggage is stored under the bus, which the driver will open. They may help I order to maintain some order.

Thank you.

  1. Upon checkin on the schedule for bus from Bolzano to Ortisei. There are only 3 bus connections after 1600hrs. What if i missed the busses or the busses are full, what other options do i have to get to ortisei?

  2. Can someone advice me on the train ticket price from tirano to st moritz. i remember someone advice me to take the regional train without the bernina express to st moritz using saver day pass, but upon checking the saver day pass cost me CHF64 if i purchase 60days in advance, while the train ticket from tirano to st moritz cost only CHF14 one way, this confuse.

Thank you in advance,

The prices you see on the page showing 5 or 6 options for that route at different departure times assume you have a Half Fare Card. Without a Half Fare Card the price is double. So it is really 28 CHF each way. And it may be more than that for a ticket you can use to get off the train at a stop and resume your journey on a later train.

A Half Fare Card is a card you buy for 120 CHF ( for a visitor card good for one month). If you are only doing this one day trip in Switzerland you won’t want to buy one, just pay regular price.

If you miss all the options to Ortisei, you can take a taxi (about Euro 90.00), but there are many more buses or train/bus combinations later in the evening. I did not look at the schedule when I answered your question earlier, just going off my knowledge of the crowd levels. I did now consult this planning site https://www.suedtirolmobil.info/en/. There you will find all the options. One is to take a regional train to Waidbruck - Lajen and there change to the bus for the final leg.

Be sure to download the mobile app for the transportation site, https://www.suedtirolmobil.info/de/meine-fahrt/app-suedtirolmobil. Very helpful to have it all in your pocket.
