Festivals, events or markets not to miss

Planning our next visit, and wanting to explore special events in different parts of Italy that you may have attended that you would consider a "don't miss". We have not picked our dates yet, as we are exploring that special something to attend then will build a trip around that.

I know that you are requesting so that you can plan your trips around events, but, once you are located in a place, it’s always good to ask if there is a sagra happening nearby. Sagre are Italian festivals to celebrate various local products – – wine, cheese, meat, honey, etc. I’ve been to quite a few and it’s always fun. They are held when a product is at its peak, so the time varies, but there are usually more of them in the fall and at other times.

In 2019, we went to the Truffle Festival in Alba (https://www.fieradeltartufo.org/en/) and the whole event was fascinating. We loved being able to walk around the event center to see people buying and selling truffles, plus being able to taste truffle dishes from the event hall as well as restaurants around town. If you will be in Alba during the festival, I do recommend making restaurant reservations in advance, because it seemed quite busy. There was one day that we had not reserved a lunch restaurant in advance, and we had to try several different restaurants before finding one with availability. The place was delicious, so ended up working out, but we were getting pretty worried after being turned away from our third restaurant (at the fourth, we were successful).

In 2013, my husband and I spent New Year's Eve in Rome, and that was pretty spectacular too. Not anything I'd be up for now that we have a young kiddo, but we had a great time when we were young and kid-free :)
