Does anyone know if you can take the ferry from Vernazza or Monterosso to Portofino or do you have to take the train?
Hi Shelley. I'm interested in finding out the answer to this question as well! I've googled to try to find the answer to your question but I find conflicting information. I don't think you can take a ferry directly to Portofino...I think you can take it to another town & then take another boat to Portofino. I know you can take a boat from Monterosso to Portovenere which I'm planning to do but I'd also like to see Portofino & I'm staying in Monterosso so I'd like to find out the answer to this as well. Hopefully someone "in the know" will reply!
I took a boat from CT - it was easy.
I remember seeing boats from most of the CT towns, you may get on one that makes a few stops - but if the weather is good, it is a wonderful way to spend time on the sea.
We picked up the ferry at Santa Margherita Ligure bound for Porto Venere or Piomaggiore, I can't remember which. However, due to rough seas which developed after we left port, the trip was terminated in Monterosso. It was so rough that we actually had difficulty getting from the boat to the dock! This was in September 2007. I don't know if rough seas are more or less common at other times. We did stay at a hotel just outside Portofino for a week and I'm not aware of ferrys going directly there, however.
The ferry will not run in rough seas. On our visit in late May, they were shut down for two days. The weather was great but the seas were rough. On the third day, we got lucky and took the ferry from Monterosso to Portovenere. Still, on that day, the ferry pulled in close to the other towns but would not stop.
