Ferry to/from Naples

Has anyone taken the ferry from Naples to Sorrento, round trip? We are wanting to do that rather than get on another train. Can I purchase tickets at the dock? Is it advisable to purchase the tickets ahead of time...online? What about the train from Rome to Naples? Okay to purchase the tickets ahead of time as well...online?

There is a huge hill from the Sorrento ferry dock up to the town. I would not try it with luggage, I would take the commuter train which drops you in town just two ish blocks up the mountain side, so a short walk down the hill into town. Also, It is not a pretty ferry ride like in Washington state, it's a sit inside the boat can't see out shuttle boat ride. J

There is an elevator from the ferry level up to town
Also a bus or taxi options

I don’t think you need to purchase tix in advance unless it’s a special day
There are several ferry companies sailing that route

You'll want Freccia tickets from Rome to Naples, and the fare can be a great deal cheaper if you buy those tickets well in advance. Check the cancellation/change policy very carefully, however.

Month of year? Ferries can be cancelled for high wave action. It is true that higher speed ferries can have sealed cabins and few windows, but I have not taken this route.

The faster (Frecciarossa) trains can be 1/3 the time, Rome-Naples. But they can be much cheaper, if non-flexible tickets, when bought six or eight weeks in advance. You can take a city bus from the station to the port in Naples.

It is usually impossible to wake up in Sorrento or beyond and fly home from Rome that day.
