Hi.
I will be going to the Amalfi Coast in July. I'll be starting in Capri and then heading over to Positano. I plan on taking a ferry from Naples to Capri. From my research I can see that there are two ports in Naples and three different ferries that go to Capri. I would like to take the slower ferry. Does anyone know if I should book the ferry ahead of time or can I get tickets at the port on the day of travel? Since it is July, I anticipate that it will be busy so I'm wondering what prebooking I should do now.
Thanks.
Julie
It can be really choppy water because of wind, etc. between Naples and Capri. It is better to do it quickly on the hydrofoil which lifts up off the water which makes the ride a little smoother.
We might give better advice if you explain why you believe the slower ferry is better. This is not a coastal scenery tour, it's open water. Our Sorrento-Capri ferries had hundreds of airline seats and just a few sealed porthole windows. No outside sitting or standing. Jammed to the rafters. In season, buy your return in advance.
Tim's comments are right on. These are working class ferries, 15 to 20 folks across, with teeny porthole windows. There IS beer, however, so it's not a total bust. Faster is better, IMO, and the hydrofoil is better for a calmer trip.

That was our experience. I was sort of green just from the ferry rocking around in the chop before we left port! It also rained all the way to Capri (but stopped just before docking). As Tim said, it's open water and not worth the slow go; take a high-speed ferry (hydrofoil).
