Ferry to Amalfi Coast Towns from Sorrento

I will be arriving in Sorrento May 11 and plan to go to Positano the next day (May 12) and Amalfi/Ravello 2 days later (May 14) hopefully by ferry. I know the ferries don't always run if weather is bad but do you recommend I pre-book the ferry based on limited availability for the departure time I want or is there usually never a problem getting tickets for 2 people? If I do pre-book and weather is bad that day do they refund your money if you can't reschedule? I've taken the bus to Positano before and it is packed and not a fun experience so trying to avoid the bus. I looked into hiring a driver but that is too expensive for just 2 people. I also looked into Mondo tours and, although reasonably priced, they don't give you enough time in each town to really check it out and enjoy it. If the ferry doesn't work then I would resort to the SITI bus. Would appreciate any input on the ferries. Thanks.

Just my guess but I don't think you'd need to pre-reserve ferries for mid May BUT, If nothing else, you can pre-purchase your tickets to Positano and Amalfi on the day you arrive in Sorrento.

Do be aware, though, that the last ferries back to Sorrento from Amalfi and Positano, in mid-May, may depart earlier in the afternoon/evening than you might wish. Mid-spring schedules are not up yet but this is what they look like currently:

Another option to consider is renting an Electric car! My husband and I did this 2 years ago in Positano. There is a company there that rents 2 seater (tandem seat) electric cars that are very small, so they are easy to maneuver on narrow roads. The drive on the Amalfi Coast highway was amazing!! We took the car from Positano to Amalfi and Ravello and had the best time! Parking was not difficult to find. We found metered spaces on the pain roads. But do take plenty of coins for the meters. We were able to just walk in to the garage and rent without a reservation.
Have fun!!

I think much gets made of the “ferries don’t run in poor weather.” The weather would have to be pretty rough for this to happen. If on the odd chance it was, there’s always the bus so don’t sweat it. There’s also no reason to book ahead. I got around in late May with zero difficulty, even catching one of the last ferries out of Positano within minutes of it sailing off. In fact, when I asked about booking a ride for the next day the ticket agent looked at me like I was nuts. You can always buy your return for a specific time that day when you arrive, but my experience was that it wasn’t super necessary.

The only key here is to get an early start! Get one of the first ferries out and you can miss a lot of the crowds.

Thanks for the input on the ferries and the links. Sounds like I can pretty much rely on them running weather-wise. Great to know. And the 2 seater electric car is something to consider as a back up plan. Thanks everyone for your input. Much appreciated! So looking forward to our trip!
