Ferry Questions: Napoli - Positano

Hi, thank you in advance for reading. My mother and I will be arriving in Positano on April 13 which is a Sunday

We are going to take the ferry but we have a few questions as this is our first time traveling anywhere other than the US with a ferry,

  1. Is it better to buy the ferry tickets directly on the companies website such as Positano Jet?
  2. When we buy the tickets what are the next steps like? Do we bring the tickets either on our phone or on paper and the ferry workers scan it?
  3. If our ferry is cancelled, how will they notify us? Will they notify us electronically or in person at the port?

We plan on getting there over an hour in advance to best prepare

Hey! I don't have experience with the specific company, but in a cancellation situation in Italy a few years ago, I had great experience with ferry hopper so since then I book my ferry tickets with them. I had a good experience with their support team, they spoke english and were responsive.
Other than that, you usually don't need to bring printed tickets along. They usually scan them directly from your phone but that depends on the company.

I was in Naples in November 2024. directferries.com is a great resource to check which companies go from where you are to where you want to go.

I went from Naples to Ischia and Procida. There are 2 port terminals in Naples and of course was directed to the wrong one so briskly walked to the right one. Bought the ticket at the port. They did not allow me to buy the ongoing ticket then. Said I needed to do it when I was wanting to travel to the next island and again had to wait till I was return to go back to Naples to buy my ticket, which actually turned out to be a good thing. We had 20mph winds and the ferry still ran.

I use MrFerry.com for ferry tickets when I visit Naples/Sorrento. The site has access to all ferry carriers that operate in the area. I would buy your tickets online for your round trip. Your ticket can be scanned from your phone. Your will receive a paper boarding pass and pay for your baggage. Be sure to check you are at the correct pier. There is a large sign at the port with all that detail. The folks that work at the port are efficient but not real friendly. No big deal

One other point, the Bay of Naples can be very rocky so take your motion sickness meds if that is an issue for you.

Ok got it, so it sounds like its best to buy it online through one of those sources such as Direct Ferries. But it also sounds like after I buy the ticket online its still not over, that there is another step. So then I would have not just to get the ticket scanned off my phone but I would also have to go to one of the ferry operators and get a paper ticket also before boarding the ferry?

Correct. The paper boarding pass is given to the ferry crew as you board the ship. You will not be able to board the ship without a pass and a receipt for your baggage fee. Both docs are provided to you when you check in at the port.
