Ferry Naples-Sorrento

We have decided to take the ferry at least one direction, maybe round trip Naples-Sorrento-Naples instead of Circumvesuviana. Is it recommended to buy your ferry tickets ahead of time? Does space fill up? We have a tight schedule on one direction that we cannot miss the designated ferry departure for the train connection--taking a later ferry would not be an option. I have this link for ferry tickets: http://www.alilauro.it/orari-e-tariffe. Your recommendations? Thanks.

How many in your party? Why aren't you leaving more time? Train to Rome??? Everything takes twice as long in Italy, so build in extra time.

I traveled through Sorrento did not stop via bus from Positano to connect with train which was easy. If you are going to take a train from Naples to ??? Why not take train from Sorrento which leaves you IN the train station directly?

Are you using Sorrento as a base and taking ferries in region to islands? If so you will have the sea travel experience.

Bus is safer for tourists generally speaking but be very aware of belongings, follow RS valuables guidelines everywhere !

Taxi can be about 55-70 euros one way Sorrento to Naples. Ferry usually in 20 euro range per ticket

I have never purchased ferry tickets in advance but don't mind waiting a half hour or so for next one. I visit the islands often.

HI JJ-nowVoyager...we are 5 in our party. Our interest in the ferry was just a different way to travel and see the coast. We will be doing an Amalfi drive down the coast one day and Pompeii another day. Why do don't we allow more time? That is really by choice in train connections. We have plenty of time for connections in Naples (from ferry port to train station) and once we are on the train in Naples, we don't get off until we arrive in Venice. We can always leave Sorrento on an earlier ferry, but not a later. However, your questions and suggestions now make me think a better option might be we take the ferry only one direction from Naples to Sorrento (again just for kicks on a different way to travel) when we don't have any time commitments, and then take the train on the return--as we venture all the way to Venice on that day. Thanks!

I would book in advance given it is high season. We did this on our last trip to Sorrento and liked it. It is a nice alternative to the Circumvesuviana, which I do not care for, especially when crowded.

Has anyone used this company for ferry tickets? I keep attempting to purchase but it is not able to proceed because it does not allow an accurate date to be entered: http://www.alilauro.it/orari-e-tariffe. I thought maybe I am attempting to book too far in advance, but even if I select tomorrow, it does not allow. Is there another site you would recommend?

Witht the costs of about $130US for 5 ppl on the ferry... and hassle of traveling to the ferry, waiting for the ferry, carrying luggage on the ferry etc. I still think a private car would be best. Less travel time overall if you factor in the travel from Naples train or airport to the ferry port and waiting for the crowd to crush into the ferry. And you are dropped right outside your hotel with 5 suitcases.....voila!

As I said, if you are traveling by ferry to the islands from Sorrento you will have the same view.

You can always get a taxi, and not be locked into making a specific ferry.

Enjoy!
